Probably everyone else in the world had this figured out in three seconds flat, but with what now only seems like three brain cells, it took my grey mass some bit longer..

What happened was, yesterday, with a flash mounted to light the scene and switching to manual mode (f8, 1/125, 100ISO), the live view turned completely black indoors. Switched to A/S/P with auto-ISO, and view was restored, switch to M again and darkness ruled once more. Only after racking my brains no end, did it finally occur to me that the live view display setting not only shows effects of white balance, creative style etc. but also exposure. With live view display setting effect off, the finder amped up and framing became possible in manual mode in a dark environment.

"Ha!!", you'll say, "that's logical!", but wait.. there's more.

Then I started to play around with various settings, and found to my astonishment that live view setting also affects auto focus in AF-C mode!

With setting effects on (finder turns dark), the camera can't find focus, and only the (( )) symbol shows. With setting effects off (finder is bright), it can; you get the ((o)) symbol that shows focus has been achieved. What seems to happen is that with setting effects off, not only does the finder amp up, but the aperture opens up as well during framing/focusing, allowing the camera to lock onto something..

I know, long story, but if the NEX-6 starts to act up in the dark, it's a good thing to check what live view display setting you have set.

Peter, you are right on the money. I struggled for a few weeks with Live View On....as I changed exposure, I couldn't see the image on the screen. So I was at the Liberty Bell and a group of tourist were there and of course, the Nex is the most popular camera. I asked a young man what was wrong with my camera and he took it and like lighting, changed a few settings and man....let there be light.....

I guess I should read the manual at some point......nah!
