Hello everyone!
I got myself a Nikon 35Ti from Japan for Christmas. The camera is in really nice mint condition and I'm very happy about it.
The only issue that I found was that it seems I cannot adjust the exposure compensation. I press the exposure compensation button and turn the command wheel as per the instructions, but the needle in the analogue display won't move either way. My suspicion is that the button is faulty, but it could of course be something else (and worse!)
I am personally not that fussed about the exposure compensation and could live without it. Now I am only concerned that it might be permanently stuck in a + or - setting and all shots will be consistently under- or overexposed.
My concern comes from the exposure compensation indicator showing permanently in the viewfinder display. Is it mean to show all the time or only when the exposure compensation has been set to a value other than '0'?
Any insights from an owner of a working 35Ti would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks!

If the exposure compensation needle points to zero there should be no problem. It's probably the button that has a contact issue. It's possible to take the top off and try to clean it, but you will have to take the front skins off and glue them back on afterwards. You could try to jog the button repeatedly to see if it helps. I have rarely needed the exposure compensation, the 35TI has the same matrix metering as the Nikon F4.

Thanks Kai, this gives me at least some reassurance that not all might be lost. Can you maybe confirm from experience if the symbol for exposure compensation shows up all the time in the viewfinder, or only if the exposure compensation is actually set either way?
As far as I understand it, the exposure compensation does not automatically to zero if the camera is switched off, unlike for example aperture or manual focus selection.
Many thanks again!

The exposure compensation symbol should only show in the viewfinder when it is actually set to either plus or minus, at zero it will disappear. The setting will not change to zero if you switch off the camera, it has to be altered manually.

Thanks for confirming this Kai! In this case the camera will go straight back to Japan and I will take up the fight with Her Majesty's Custom's folk to reclaim my import VAT :bang:

Resetting 28Ti/35Ti custom functions
Resetting 28Ti/35Ti custom functions
This may or may not help but there is a way to reset the Exposure Compensation dial. When playing with my 28ti I turned it up but then could not turn it down. The reset fixed it.
How to do it is in this link:

It is worth a try before the hassle of sending it back.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the tip. Already gave this one a try. I could reset all the other dials with the custom functions, but the exposure compensation dial would not shift at all. This is likely due to the button being faulty, which then would also make any resetting impossible as it has to be pushed down whilst turning the command wheel at the same time.
All the best,
Hannes
