Anyway, does this critter need film in it to fire the shutter? Local shop's got one and the shutter wouldn't fire but we didn't put film in it, lazy sorts that we are.

Some of the Nikon's AF's didn't fully function until the counter was on "1". The autoload tries to sense the film running, and I think the little Lite-Touch gives up and turns off with no film.
So yank an old roll from the frige and test it...

These point and shoots have to be sold, and that means they have to be demo'd, and that means they have to click without film. The average person will not be tempted to buy a P&S that sits as dead as a doornail even if brand new..
The only thing I've ever run across with P&S without film in, is that the film advance isn't running. But focus and click they always did..

How many is enough?
I just tried my 35Ti. No film in it. Turned it on to "P", it made the motor sound as if it was trying to load a film. Then, when I pressed the shutter button, it does fire, and the flash does fire too. Tried it several times, so the one in your shop has an issue. Battery OK? Maybe its been lying around too long...
