I have a Helios 103 adjusted for Nikon, thanks Brian. But, I can't resist the urge to have a Nikon 5cm f1.4 on my camera. So, today I bought one from KEH in excellent condition. I can't wait to get it. I'm thinking of buying one of the vented hoods for it. Is anyone else using a hood on their lens? Or is this particular lens less prone to flare? Thanks.

I have the LTM version of the lens and find it very susceptible to flare. I use the hood all the time. Mine is a vented 43mm thread mounted hood. I believe it's a Heavystar via eBay (came with the lens when I bought it off the Classifieds here).

I have a Heavystar 43mm straight sided vented hood on my Nikkor 50/1.4. I also have the Canon Series VI 35mm/50mm lens hood and a Tiffen 43mm to Series VI ring. I suppose I should attemp a test to see which hood works best. Both seem to do the job.

I would recommend a hood with the 50f1.4. It will flare quite heavily if not used! The Heavy Star or any of the screw-in hoods works well. The original hood, apart from being expensive is also prone to falling off and rolling underneath cars, couches or into street drains!
