My desktop box has died, video card blew then the power box. So I went for a new Dell, has plenty of umph but my Nikon 8000 ED scanners fire wire cable will not go into the new box.
So went to Staples and the young boy said I needed this $7 connector for the FireWire into the new box, they did not have one, so Amazon slipped me one today. Well the computer does not recognize the scanner, bloody marvelous result.
So what do I need to do, repair my old box ??? I just serviced the Nikon and she is as smooth as new.
Help me boys please, someone has to have has this issue with a desktop box dying before their scanner has

PSU and simple video card will cost you like $100 or less. Why did you buy a new computer?

What OS were you using before, and what is on the new Dell?

Not enough info to answer your question.

What scanning software are were you running?
Nikon 4 was the last Nikon Scan SW and has not been compatible for some time.
You can Run Vuescan.

You need to buy a Firewire PCIe card. About 10$ I think. I bought one to adapt my Nikon 4000 to new PC.

This. I had to buy one of these to be able to keep using my Nikon 9000 when my old desktop PC died at the end of 2012 and I replaced it with a new machine running Windows 8. Still using that 2012 PC and PCIe Firewire card today, both PC and Nikon 9000 are still working fine.

Well I have for some reason lost my original Nikon Download software CD's, I got Viewscan years back but preferred the Nikon system.
Nikon does not support this scanner any longer, no surprised there after a few years they drop you like a hot potatoe. Anyhow I have re downloaded Viewscan but until I can get a connection for the scanner I am shut out.
My old desktop pc's hard drive is still in the case. I am going to take it out and get something that will allow me to plug it into one of the sockets in the new desktop box and then hopefully, I can then use that hard drive to fly the scanner but again I need to get the PC connected to the scanner.
I am sixty and use old medium format cameras, not at all computer literate. I suppose I could find a wiz kid in the college to help me for a helping fee.
If I did this who would I ask for at the college ????
Appreciate the help here from you of the younger generation in this matter.
Just did a Washington DC trip and then one in Hawaii with my Hasselblad SWCM and Rolleiflex 3.5F cameras, my black and white negatives are developed and awaiting some scrutiny from the scanner before I decide on what to print in the darkroom.
Cheers,
James.

While not officially supported, Nikon Scan still works on later operating systems. I'm using it on Windows 7 with no problems at all, and have heard of people using it on Windows 10. There are also workarounds for using it on the later Mac operating systems.

So far as I know, there is no way to use Nikon Scan on an Intel Mac running later versions of OS-X. Apple took away the "Rosetta" software that allowed PowerPC software like Nikon Scan to run on Intel Macs during one of the OS updates.

Nikon Scan installs and runs fine on Windows 10. You need to right click on the install exe file and set the compatibility to Windows XP.
The drivers are another matter. The Nikon drivers are incompatible with Windows 10, and even with Nikon Scan intalled, Windows 10 won't recognize the hardware without the drivers. Vuescan has good drivers.

Problem with digital is updates and things going obsolete and you don`t find out until too late.

My Mac Pro is used for photos and not connected to the internet ever.

Right, I suspect your problem (among other possibilities) is Win 10. I have it on my laptop, and truly hate it. It is a POS operating system compared to XP, no matter what others may tell you. I have had nothing but trouble from it. I don't much like Win 7 either, but it is not nearly as bad as 10.

If it were me, I would get an older computer from eBay w/ the same operating system your old computer had, and use that one for your scanner. It would simplify everything if you bought one w/ a firewall card/connection already on it.

These computers can be bought all day long for well under $100 incl shipping. Just make sure it has at least 2 gig of memory for the large file scans. But, if all you are using the scanner for is proofing and will be wet printing the keepers later, just reduce the file sizes to their absolute minimum.

There are a lot of ways to approach your problem, but this one is the simplest if you aren't a computer geek.

Still got an old G4 Power PC desktop that I have the Coolscan hooked up to. Not good for much else, but it still runs that scanner fine. Really a shame how all this software updating stuff makes such good hardware obsolete.

Best,
-Tim

I ended up buying an older model iMac which has the 1394 port (that the CS8000 connects to). This was almost a year ago, the iMac cost me $200, but it just died, so I'm going to have to find another old computer or a newer scanner.

Feels like I'm circling the drain.

This is why I keep my Vista machine from 2009 - so I can run my Coolscan V. Just got a windows 10 pro laptop but I'll leave that for my digital cameras. I even went so far as to get standalone Lightroom 6 rather than trying to force Lightroom 4 into it. My Epson R2400 printer installed fine. As was mentioned above I much prefer The NIKON Scan software, having tried the Vue Scan years ago.

I use the Nikon 9000 with VueScan utilizing a FireWire to Thunderbolt interface adapter with my MacBook Air. Works great, I've never even bothered to try NikonScan.

All your u need is a FireWire interface and whatever software you want to run it with. I'd strongly suggest VueScan since it is maintained and supported for latest OS releases.

Don't be afraid of the computer. I'm three years older than you... I just learn whatever I need to when a problem develops. It's really not that hard.. you don't need a genius to do that. 🙂

One thing to keep in mind about NikonScan vs VueScan. Although I use VueScan for all my black & white scanning on my CoolScan 9000, I still use NikonScan to calibrate my scanner before each scanning session. Maybe I've missed it somewhere, but I never found a way to calibrate my CoolScan 9000 with VueScan. This is why it's important to me to have an old computer to do my scanning, so I can use NikonScan as well as VueScan.

Best,
-Tim

Seriously? Just buy a 300W PSU and a cheap video card. You'll be out $60-100 total. Why buy a new computer (and a Dell at that!)

VueScan Pro version has full capability to do IT8 color calibration for any given scanner, as far as I'm aware. I am not sure because I've never used it ... I scan for maximum data with the notion that I'll be doing the rendering in image processing software and generally have VueScan produce DNG files for that purpose.
