Frank is terrific. If you have a CoolScan in the USA that has not had a mirror cleaning or is encountering any difficulty, you need Frank Phillips.
Seriously.

Thanks for posting that. Probably need to have mine looked at some time, while the service is still available.

I bought a replacement lens for my 4000 from him. Mine had become foggy over the years. Got my old faithful up and running again.

It's good to know someone is still working and solving problems on the coolscans.

Thanks for the notice! Have bookmarked the website. He's local for me. I bought my Coolscan V New Years ago but have never had it serviced since, so it's probably about time.

There is a very active facebook group that he is part of for coolscan users. There is a lot of technical troubleshooting that they can help with. Cleaning the mirror is not that hard, and can be done by most users. More serious issues could be worth using his repair service for.

I had Gleb Shtengel service my CS9000 last year. He did an excellent job, and he publishes instructions for those who are adventerous.

Gleb and Frank are the go-to people.
OK, joke time: Two scanner experts, Frank & Gleb, walk into a bar... [ GO! ]

Frank says Neekon and Gleb says Nykon, and they never talk to each other again.
Frank says, "This place looks Cool. Scan the number of whiskies on the shelf!"
Gleb hits him over the head with his F2.

Thanks for the info! I assume the same for my CoolScan (never opened it) but I am unfortunately quite far to send it in for service.

That is a good point. I had Nikon Service in Tokyo doing this 10 yrs ago. Might be the time for a new cleaning.

In a similar vein I cleaned the mirror in a fax machine and rescued it from the dump. Easy and remarkable improvement.
