I have a Nikon F arriving in a few days (yeah!). The 50mm f2 lens dates back to 1960. One website said that a L38 filter would work. I have no clue what that is or where to buy one? Or even if that is needed? Any thoughts?

Thanks!

That L38 code tells that it's a Nikon UV filter, like their later L37 and L37C filters.

The 50mm f/2 lens threads are 52mm so that's a 52mm filter which you need. Any modern multicoated 52mm UV filter will mount, as well as any 52mm yellow, orange, red filter...

If you want a multicoated Nikon filter - I believe these had the letter C after the L# (eg L37C)
As to use - many folks (self included) only use filters under difficult environmental conditions (e.g. blowing sand, etc.) - preferring a lens hood for protection instead
Enjoy the F
