Interesting to see what this will go for... Nikon F number #87 off the production line, with a cloth shutter. 1959, I presume.

More info on PetaPixel.

Looks to be in "user" condition.

Regardless of the seller's expertise or lack thereof, the punters have decided it's the real deal as the auction is already at $4050

That camera is ugly. For $350 you can have the same thing with a titanium shutter in near perfect condition. The collector factor is beyond me there...

SOLD: $6,111.00 with 27 bids...

Wander when Nikon switched to Titanium for the Shutter?

A waste of money, in my opinion. Life is too short for spending such a sum on such a camera.

Exactly my thinking when some buy new M-A instead of buying an M2 or M4, or an MP instead of an M6. Each to their own and the size of their disposable I suppose.

Spending lots of money on old cameras has not been proven to prolong one's life span (second cousin of Confucius...maybe)

ha, it's one of those 'I'm no camera expert' listings!

Actually I've been following that seller, seems he inherited a HUGE camera collection from his grandfather, the old guy collected all kinds of cameras, many of them kind of junk. Guess he had this one very early Nikon F and the grandson thought it was just an old camera. When he listed it the first time, he was swamped with questions, cloth curtains?, etc.?, and that's when he realized that it was an early model and might have some collector value. He then re-listed it and he got $6100 for it. Good for him. Certainly not something I would ever buy, but I can understand someone with the disposable income who wanted a piece of early Nikon SLR history.

Best,
-Tim

#6465043 Nikon F...paid $10 for it...I don't think I would own one if I hadn't come across this one...It's neat to know I own a #6400000 first series Nikon F...someone now owns a first 100 of this body, they paid a large sum of money for it...hopefully they're as happy as I am for mine...
It hasn't changed my life but it is fun to use...

In the Nikon F FB group, there was mention that #85, 86, 88 were also put up for sale...
Not sure it was the same owner.

I am happy with my $10 Nikon F2... (it just needed some shutter exersize) 804xxxx (1979) and a free DP-1 from my repair guy.
Great cameras with a ton of under $150 Nikkor lenses available.

Just because you won't spend the money doesn't mean collectors won't...
Zeiss Topogons, Nikon SP in black, original black paint M3s,MPs etc are cool. And thus command $$$
