Can anyone with THE above combo tell me how long their meter stays on for on half press of motor release please. My meter switches off after 30 without motor and 85 with. Is this normal? thanks john

Sitting at the pool with kids and the FE2with the MD12...

Mine has died, so I can't test it, but it felt like more than twice the time with the camera alone. Perhaps it is 50 on top of the camera side 30 seconds?

With the MD-12 on, it is powering the meter system, so it's not a drain on the camera battery. 80 seconds isn't going to hurt the drives batteries either.

Whew, long and busy day. Just got a minute to myself, put the MD12 on the FM2n and got this:
30 seconds no motor drive
87 seconds with motor drive
I find it interesting that the FE2, on re-checking, still turns off at 15 seconds without the motor drive, half the time of 30 seconds with the FM2n. But, both the FE2 and the FM2n turn off at 85 seconds with the motor drive turned on.

thanks everyone, it's behaving normally. interestingly, well to me anyway is that without batteries in the camera, the motor works but not the meter.

The MD-12 does not power the meter in the FM2n, just the drive mechanism. That's unlike the F-3/MD4 combo where the motor does power the camera.

I found a late revision of the manual, which lists the later cameras as well (http://nikonclassics-michalke.de/Prospekte/Nikon MD-12 Anleitung.pdf). So according to Nikon the time varies with the camera used, 50 seconds for the FM/FE, 80 for the FM2, and 66 for the FE2/FA!

My mistake. Getting things mixed up while trying to learn all I can about my recent F3 purchase.
What the MD-12 does is automatically shut off the meter circuit after a time delay, which the MD-11 does not.

Better yet I'd like to know the noise level in dB produced by this combo!
(Yes, as a matter of fact I did own and use an FM2n with MD-12.)

It's a very many combination
nothing subtle
they'll know you're coming well before you get there
I will test with my iPhone dB meter in the interest of science

Yeah it is crazy loud! But cool in that crazy loud kinda way. I think of it as a very retro sound. My F6, which can wind the film more than twice as fast as the MD12/FM2/FE2 combo, is silent in comparison.
Duran Duran may have used the FM2/MD12 combo for the intro to "Girls on Film". Could not have done it with my F6..

That motor drive sound was ubiquitous.
For me it evokes memories of every press conference held for twenty years starting in the late 1970's.

It's loud as heck but I love the sound of it and the tactile feedback you get through the grip with each shot.
Certainly not a stealth combo.

Yeah I wish my M Motor on my M7 felt like that.

Johnny-come-very-lately to this party. Haven't had my FM2N w/MD-12 out in a long time. Pulled it out this afternoon:
With MD-12 turned off, meter turned off in 30 seconds.
With MD-12 turned on, meter turned off in 89 seconds.
For what it's worth.
