I finally put together the makings of a good Nikon rangefinder outfit with the S2 Black Dial as the centerpiece. It came with a 2/5cm that has a bit of separation, and I had already accumulated a 3.5/3.5cm and 2/8.5cm, a Varifocal finder, and various caps and cases. It’s a good start.

Very good! One can`t go wrong with a Nikon S2 in my opinion.

I like "Woody Sushi" best. :)

Check, but you might find the full viewfinder of the S2 is really close to a 28mm.

Congrats on the great kit.

A lovely kit! I like the Woody Sushi shot too.

Close to a 35mm for sure. Not a 28mm. ;)

Considering that the S2 frame line is closer to 55mm than 50mm, I'm not sure how one would go about framing even a 35mm lens through an S2 finder, unless scanning around the veeeery edge of the finder and even then framing quite loosely. More power to those that can do it though (I couldn't ).

(...) framing quite loosely.

Those are the good keywords. ;) Using a 35mm lens without any external finder with an S2 and framing with 100% of what you see in the finder (without wearing glasses) can be done as an emergency method, but this couldn't be recommended of course.

Nice Nikon RF set to get started with!

Scanning allll the way around the edge of the S2 finder does indeed work for 35mm, although the results will be a bit inexact.

I got some weird looks when walking around with an S2 and the varifocal finder once. And comments, something to the effect of "now that's antique!".

One of my all time favourite cameras.

I like to use the J-12 lens on mine ( scratched front camera plate and all) along with the superb Nikkor 5cm f1.4 lens.

Thanks, all. It is indeed a joy to use this outfit, and I plan on expanding it a bit more. I don't find the 85 overweight, considering I've been using some pretty heavy stuff over the years. I sometimes wish my newer cameras had a bit more heft to them.

The sushi hut has been many iterations before (coffee, donuts, etc.), but isn't old enough to be a Fotomat. It was built many years after I moved here in '99.

I'm still not comfortable with using the Varifocal, only in that I'm always thinking it is just a little off rotational wise. Guess I'll have to mount the rig on a tripod and check it with a level to be sure. It does frame well though.

It truly is a vast improvement on the Contax IIa.
