I'm in the midst of swapping a Nikon S3-2000 kit, and in digging out the gear, I'm abashed to (re?)discover some impact damage to the 50mm f/1.4 Nikkor-S lens. There's no effect on lens function.

Minor impact damage to the side of the front ring of the lens between the aperture ring and the filter. Trying to remove the filter, the lens front ring unscrews. Even when tightened, the stop detents don’t result in the aperture numbers lining up exactly with the indicator dot.

Question is how much this reduces the value of the lens... and if Nikon USA is a preferred repair outfit for time and cost... good service? Is there another repair outfit that would be as good or better?

This is the only Nikon I've ever owned, so I'm not familiar with the related resources... Thanks for any suggestions.

Doug, the the Millennium Nikkor-S 50/1.4 can be repaired (parts replaced), but most likely only in Japan. You might be able to send the lens via Nikon America. If not, let me know and we can sort something out. Nikon Japan has replaced the front lens group on two of these for me in the past.

Thanks for your helpful comments, gents. I contacted Nikon USA repair dept, plus one of the authorized shops on their list, plus Stephen at CameraQuest. All suggested I send it in for examination. So it's now on its way to Stephen.

jonmanjiro, it's likely that replacing the front ring would be the best repair; do you have access to the part?

FWIW, here's a snapshot of the damage:
