I have a really nice S3 that came with a 50mm lens. I’m interested in adding ac35mm lens, but don’t want to pay upwards of $1K for one. What other lenses would work?

You should be able to find a Nikkor 35/2.5 for a few hundred $. Igor Camera has one on their site now. I have one and it's excellent.
You could also consider a modern Voigtlander SC Skopar 35/2.5 for less than $500 at Cameraquest. It's probably the same optical formula as the Leica-mount versions, which is a great lens.

Nikkor 35/2.5 is nice and very compact. Here it is on my Bessa R2S.

I acquired a perfect Nikkor 35/2.5 a couple of months ago on this forum for 165.
Look for a chrome one to save $
Great lens!

If you look around on flea bay, you can find 3.5cm f1.8 nikkor's for under a grand.
The 3.5cm f2.5 nikkor can be had in the $300=$500 range, the voigtlander/Nikkor-s version is usually about $100 more and generally more modern coated glass (but I just spied one for less then the Nikkor version

You can use a Kiev/Contax mount Jupiter 12 lens on the RF Nikons and they are a good lens based on the pre war Zeiss Biogon and go for 50 to 80 dollars. Just be careful mounting the lens, as some will scratch the front plate on Nikon RF cameras.. some folks lightly file around the mount on the lens to avoid this.

The Jupiter-12 can be awesome, just be aware that you may have some fitting to do. I had a little decentering on all my FSU lenses and I had to do a little work on them, but the J-12 is a fantastic optic, virtually no distortion.
As previously mentioned, the 3.5cm f/2.5 Nikkor is a great lens. I got one off of craigslist in Jersey City, NJ maybe 8 years ago and it was the lens that began my conversion to Nikon RF glass over Leica. I just preferred the look and especially the price. That first Nikon mount 3.5cm lens cost me maybe $50. It was the heavy chrome but that was fine. It made beautiful images.

I picked up a mint S-mount Voigtlander 35/2.5 Color Skopar for $200 a few weeks ago. Really nice lens, highly recommend it.

Does anyone actually use a 105mm lens on the S3 without a separate viewfinder? How accurate is the frameline, and can you accurately focus wide-open?
I think the best setup for the S3 is:
21/25mm Voigtlander
35mm 1.8 (or 2.5, or voigtlander 2.5)
50mm Millenium (or Zeiss 1.5, or voigtlander 2.5)
It's a hard call! Even though it's a "dead" system, there are a lot of nice modern lenses to choose from.

You won't find a better external viewfinder for 105 than the internal viewfinder on a life-size Nikon RF.
