Nikonos 35mm @ f/22?

Regardless how good it may be, it must be worse than at f/11-f/16 (depending on what standard you apply to the diffraction limit). ;)

It's the same optics as the great Nikon RF, which doesn't need to be nearer than f8 to f22 to be outstanding. If you're wishing to minimize the tedium of scale focus via smallest aperture, you are probably prepared for any trade offs in IQ.

I don't have any Nikonos images handy, but will look in my catalog later. I made some dry land shots before taking it underwater.

These days I think of the Nikonos III as a rainy day/rafting camera, because in my case, being devoted to available light shooting (even in the clear shallows of Kauai) meant even fewer keepers/roll than on land--there's so much sediment and diffraction...

Is there anybody out there who knows how the nikonos 35mm performs at f/22?

Although I've used my Nikonos V for many underwater shots, I seldom used my 35mm lens, so don't have any images handy to share. However, I 'd be happy to take some test shots at f/22 with my 35mm lens and Nik V and post them here if that will help you.

This was taken with a Nikonos V and the 35mm lens, but I don't think it was at f/22. I shot a number of rolls of Tri-X with the Nikonos and the 35mm on dry land and didn't find the need to go to f/22 IIRC.
