Nothing New Under the Sun (No 98)

Arnold is clearly overwhelmed by his own brilliance and ingenuity!

Great link! The 'selfie stick' is a pretty obvious idea, but then in the present age it's people with the obvious ideas who seem to make the most money!

But shutter buttons in those days went up and down, like most still do. Apart from the Exakta which could be pushed back but not in those days as it hadn't been invented...

If it were a selfie stick with the camera attached to it, the stick would exit the frame at the bottom, not at the top to one side as it does.

The stick seems to point towards the shutter release of a folding camera.

If the camera really was mounted to the stick though I suppose it would be easier to hold the camera level if it was upside down (otherwise it'd be like a balancing act).

OK, how about the self timer being used? That little lever you swing round at the bottom of an old fashioned shutter, then press the shutter release and hold the stick out with the camera tied to it?

Shutter buttons on those cameras are a tiny little lever. Try aiming accurately and pushing down with a stick, it's difficult...

Also you're about 2 or 3 feet away and the walking stick has a steel tip, not recommended because of the damage you might do. Even if you could get the end of the stick there without problems due to clearance.

Of course, as I said, you could push a button back but Exaktas hadn't been invented then, nor Yashica Mats and those are all I can think of with button for the shutter like that.

PS On the other hand he could have been caught lashing out at the paparazzi...
