Dear all;
I got out the alpenhaus conversion at a studio nude figure shoot that I was doing, that the results can be found here:

These were all shot on HP5. I had the lab do them rather then do them at home as I did not want to mess up a modeling fee!
I use grafmatic backs, and the lab guy lets me use the company darkroom to unload them, very cool of him.
C&C welcome as usual.

Nice work! What lens is on your conversion, and what aperture did you use to achieve the depth of field in the shots?

the lens is a 150mm prinz I'm pretty sure that this was made for a long closed camera company out of Chicago by one of the German manufactures.
These were all shot w/ Strobes, and as I was using ISO 400 film, the aperture was fairly large, around F11-F13. Of course on large format, this will allow for a relatively shallow DOF.

I am converting a Pacemaker Speed Graphic to use with a 6 in Petzval lens. Will be able to use the Kalart RF and the focal plane shutter for studio or available light. Nice stuff with the Alpenhaus!

I found it a bit of a pain to get my 7" Aero Ektar set up on the Kalart, but once I got it, it produced excellent results.
Using the focal plane shutter you will only be able to shoot with FP flash bulbs though. Due to the travel time of the shutter, you can't sync to an electronic flash; the light is too instantaneous so you'll get part of the frame underexposed. (Unless there's an electronic flash that does a "burn" similar to what FP bulbs do. AFAIK there isn't, but I'm hardly a lighting guru) You can work around this by shooting in a totally dark room, opening the shutter, triggering the flashes, then closing it, but at that point the rangefinder probably isn't very useful. If you're electronically minded, I suppose it wouldn't be too hard to rig up something that killed the room lights as soon as you tripped "B" or "T".
If you're using an in-lens leaf shutter, you can sync to an electronic flash no problem. I was messing around with it last night (just got new radio triggers in the mail), butchered a PC cord, wrapped each wire around a bi-post connector, and connected it to the wireless transmitter/receiver.

I plan on shooting with hot lights or available light outside. The lens is F/4 so shouldn't be a problem. Just heard from Fred Lustig on the repair. He's out until 6/15. Grrrrrr

I have a speed as well, and was planning on getting an Aero Ektar. After much soul searching and reading on largeformatphotography.info, I gave up that idea and got a 210mm Schnider.
Seemed to fit my portrait style better than the Ektar would, and less work!
Hot lights should solve the sync problem in a most elegant and cost effective way!
