Numbers bleeding through on Adox film?

I recall recently reading a post about the reason why the numbers on the backing paper for Adox/Efke film bled through onto the negative, other than the obvious one of light through the red window.

I've just got two rolls of Adox 50, expiry date May 08, back from Ilford and they are terrible! Various things went wrong (including the flange on a spool getting broken in the post...), but there is a note with both films saying that the numbers coming through onto the film is probably due to old film... Now, I recall reading a thread about this recently, and someone stated that it was a problem that had been solved, but I can't get the search facility to find a thread recent enough to be the right one or one that states it's a known problem. Can anyone else recall that thread, or find it? I'd be interested to read it!

Many thanks,

Adrian

*ETA to add that both cameras had covers on the red window... so I suspect it was a film probem, rather than just light.
