I wouldn't take it so personally, it certainly wasn't directed at yourself as an individual. I'm sorry to make light of someones misfortune, however minor it might be in comparison to others.

If you've lived in NYC, you ought to know not to leave valuables parked in a car on the street. I've had cars broken into in Manhattan and Jersey City even when there was nothing of value in them. It sucks either way, but why invite trouble.

And THAT is why I never leave any of my gear in the car, even parked in the garage at home. It is just smart sense to habitually carry the camera/bag with you even if you in a "nice" neighborhood.
Example: In Peachtree City, there are a number of women who meet at the upscale tennis center to play in the mornings. They generally leave their purses/wallets in the back of their SUV's when they grab their gear bag and head for the courts.
Guess what?
Recently, over a half dozen car windows were smashed and all valuable contents grabbed by a bright-enough criminal who simply watched the ladies and knew that they left their valuables in the SUV. In less than 30 seconds, he had quite a haul and left a lot of families in turmoil.
So, heed the advice, NEVER leave your gear in the car. My long-time mentor lost ALL of his gear one day just stopping to eat lunch. Guess what he had on the back window of his SUV? J___ W______ Photography....

My M5s need red dots!
This and many other stories read in P.Net are the reason why I simply never leave gear in my car, no matter where it's parked. My wife understands it, and if it's to keep it from being stolen she'll tolerate that I lug about a camera into the Chicago Lyric Opera.
I read a long time ago that during a garbage collector's strike in NY, in the sixties or seventies, some city officer devised a way to get rid of his garbage and pull a fast one on thieves: he put some of his home garbage in bags, gift-wrapped the bags in fancy paper and bows, and left them in the passenger seat of his car, with the window rolled down (why risk a broken glass).
Packages never lasted more than a few minutes. I think he said he would have liked to be there when the thieves opened the package. I imagine chicken bones, orange peel, assorted discarded items of the smelly persuasion...
