Hello all,

A week ago I stumbled over an bay auction in Germany named "Leica Brutal" (I think its the same in english, isnt it?) there was this little IIIa with retrofit flash synchronisation on the top plate right between Ernst and Leitz!!! How could they be soo cruel?!? The seller said that its shutter is firing but not correctly....I thought what the heck and placed my bet (wanting an Barnack Leica or clone for the longest Time to acompany my Summar)...guess what...I got it for the nice sum of 80€ !! excactly as much as FED-1´s sell from a Russian seller here at German Bay!!

The shutter was indeed firing but kinda loud and when set below 1/100 sec sometimes it got stuck halfway through the Frame....not knowing what to do I first thought of sending it to Oleg for a good CLA. after imagining to be without it for several weeks and having to pay the amount of puchase for the CLA (which is very low btw. I payed around 250 for letting Leicashop vienna CLA my Bargain M3..ok they did an mind blowing job on the thing...feeling soooo smooth now!) I came to the conclusion that I should try myself and if everything goes wrong I could still send it to Oleg. (I imagine the Leica-shop technician would have a stroke if he sees this III..and I wouldnt wanna pay for that ;) )

So after dissasembly and cleaning nothing improved.....I lubricated all the gears with Teflon Oil and still no improvement....after adjusting the closing curtain roller the reason for her misbehaviour became obvious in form of a loud metallic noise ...a broke Shutter roller spring......the real challenge started! some hours passed were I tried to dissasemble the Shutter crate without success (has anyone an Idea how the Long times mechanism comes off?) I succeeded in getting the roller out with slightly bending the crate away from the top plate...not really classy but doable. the spring was in very bad condition for 1/4th of the metall but the rest was fine it seemed... I cut the spring at the point were it seemed to crack easily and fitted the rest back into the roller....reassembled and it worked!!! and even better....it worked very quiet! I could now give far less tension to the rollers than it had before..
I hope that the Lubricants don´t do any long term damage but I don´t see any good reason why? ( the info on the web in repairing Barnacks is very scarce)

the TV-Shutter test proved that the faster times were good and my test-roll confirmed that! ... IM SO HAPPY!!! :D

I never thought I would lay my hands on "repairing" something as nicely made as a Leica but after seeing how it "snipps" again I´m very proud of it!

Congratulations, the opportunity to sort out a Barnack on the cheap and be successful must be nice. - Enjoy -

Congratulations, it must be a very satisfying feeling to have it working again. Now all you have to do is get the old girl some new clothes before she catches a cold.

Congratulations! :) Never seen a sexier Leica :p Now, you've got a choice of what to clothe her. There's shiny black vinyl (would Leicas be more sensual in it?), morocco synthetics, or even real reptile skin. :D

It's quite common for repairists to attach the flash synch terminal on the top plate- right on the logo. It's the emptiest space under the top plate where the sync terminal could fit, and it also saves effort in running wires through the camera body. Some retrofitted flash terminals would be found in front, on the body shell under the slow speed dial. But that would involve more wires and some drilling through the top plate and shutter crate. It could also fit at the back, where the Leica flash terminal is usually found but that would involve some filing and modification of the interior parts.

Go and shoot with her! :)
