Looking for a Leica 21mm f/2.8 ELMARIT-M Aspherical Black Lens. Several here have said you can find good deals on used glass. I would like to know where to look as I am looking for new but would accept this lens in used but must be in like new condition.

Any help would be great.

How about posting a WTB on the Photo.net Leica Forum. Do your research and figure out how much you would like to pay before doing do.

Every so often they crop up on eBay, but the prices vary wildly. I'd look for store prices as reference.

Just curiosity... Did you give some thought to the CV line of glass?

Good luck and have fun shopping!

Unfortunately the good deals on used glass are most of the times for the glass you already own or plan to sell :)

Perhaps it is not a bad idea to waite another month or so to find out how the 21/2.8 Zeiss Ikon is rated given the good reviews the 25 mm got from Putz .
The 21 and 85 are the last in the line up to be released (in August they say). These are the 2 lenses to be manufactured in Germany instead of Japan

Lowest price in shop for a mint 2nd hand Leica 21 asph in Europe i have seen is Euro 1550,- (new around Euro 2200,--)

Good luck

Han

I plan to build quite a collection of lenses but my most important, I want to be the latest in Leica asph. CV does have some interesting lenses and before I am done, I will most likely own some.

From what I have seen on this lens when it is on eBay, its price is quite near what I can buy new with a warranty. B and H has a 9+ rated used one but only about $500 from their new price. These Leica lenses seem to hold value well even the classic Leica glass still demands a good price.

A BIG hope of mine is that Leica will come out with their own RF digital one day and I would think that all this M glass would be able to be used on it. I don't see any other path.

A possible other path is to buy Zeiss M-mount lenses, given that their rumored design rationale (in part) is for a digital RF cam.

We will see, I will keep looking and searching for the release of the 21mm Zeiss. As this is a rather wide angle lens, it has go to be really well made to give corner to corner sharpness at larger aperatures.

I will look for more information.

First reports on the new Zeiss 15mm is that it is a cracker... :)

Also a much less expensive alternative is the Kobalux/Avenon/Bower/Pasoptik 21mm/f2.8. About nine of them were sold out of Japan on this forum a month ago. No longer made but pretty high quality lens - around $500 - $600.

I take it "Cracker" is good. I looked at Zeiss's website and they got some fast lenses in my range. These people made good lenses for my Hassy so I will give them a try. The 21mm and 15 are going to be mine if they are decent

I have both the CV 15 and 21 and they are on my cam more so than some of my Leica glass. These are not rangefinder coupled and I typically use them for street shooting, often from the hip. Their generous DOF is ideal for this kind of candid work. Sharp and contrasty as well. A bargain at the current prices.

Congrats Greg! I read that is some lens - looking forward to seeing some pics from it - I really like the 21 & 15mm lengths and have a 21 myself that I don't use enough.

Probably shortened from the expression "Cracker Jack" which is definitely good. Calling anything a "cracker" here in Georgia - indeed, the South - is likely to be met with a frown... or worse. :D

BTW, congrats on what should be a fine optic.

Thanks everyone. Trying to get ready for my first trip to the Grand Canyon. Was going in August but going to wait till cooler September. Have never been there and am going to spend about 10 days but a few will be used at Vegas.

Am hoping the 21mm will be wide enough, got to take some images with it to decide. I love the wide angles.

I will post some images, taking some images of the local regatta this weekend, I think I am leaving the DSLR at home and pushing the R-D1 into service. I am loving what I see come out of the printer!

Well, I did it. I got the Leica 21mm asph and the 21mm R-D1 finder on the way.
A big committment, Greg, but that should be just marvelously useful, a most useful angle of view. Looking forward to seeing some pics!

Am hoping I have as good as a time as you did. Will take lots of images and doubt the 21mm will come off the camera too many times.

Yes, I am looking forward to the wider angle images, which are my favorite. The depth of field should be greatly increased to allow some great shots.

21mm Leica asph just arrived, can wait to get it mounted to the camera when I get home. It got one nice looking front element!
