Olympus E-P1 from the street....

Can you be more specific about what you like about it WRT street shooting? It's certainly faster than a DP2, but what else?
 
I look at a lot of photos on the web from this camera and I just can't see what distinguishes it from many small SLR's in the images it produces. Just curious why you consider it a great street camera?
 
I'll try to answer both of you.....

The camera has a very classic feel to it. It's the first camera since my M's that actually feels like a camera. The menu is very easy and fast to navigate. The settings you need most often are at your finger tip. I normally like a view finder on top but this is working from the screen. The screen can be seen clearly to about 170 degrees of an angle.

It records very fast with no lag...and...you can get a second image as fast as you can press the release...

Noise is totally acceptable to about 2450 or so with B&W going higher....This makes it perfect for street work....
It has Image Stablizer in the body...so all lenses will have the advantage of IS...
You can use Leica Glass on it....

Pickett...remember that Adobe has not released ACR for the camera yet. The OLY software is the worst....I'd rather paint the kitchen....so,...
after the ACR is up and we can process the RAW files in PS or LR...we really aren't seeing anything worth counting as good or what ever...I am working from Jpegs because that's the only way I have to process the images....

I'm updating a few threads over at Getdpi....and there's many users there with the Ep1....

One can process E-P1 RAW files in Raw Developer or if you are an adventurer, one can hack Capture One.
 
How do you like using the external optical viewfinder? I like your selection of photos.

So far I just have the zoomie. In the future I will get th
17mm and finder but will wait to see if a focus scale is
added in a firmware....
I hate zoomies but this one is ok.

The noise is my friend. It is like grain from film.
I think things will get better once we get
Adobe on board.

No VF Will........cool beans.....

I incorrectly assumed a viewfinder was being used, from this image, since the camera was being held up to one's face, and I don't think you can view an LCD effectively this close:

I can see a whole new breed of Winogrands, equipped with Oly Pens, out on the street capturing the decisive moment... and all the M3's gathering dust on the shelfs...:eek:

<fun aside, I like your photos, you're truly talented!

interesting aproach... so unleicalike.. no RF involved... heresy!! :cool:

I couldn't figure this out with the demo camera I tried. If you want to use an external finder, you should be able to turn off the screen.

J...you can turn off the screen but so far, there is no focus scale to set Hyper Focal....
sooo....it's guestimation but the AF works really well....

You can set the Fn button to turn on or off the screen (or to change image quality, or to do DOF preview, or many other things).

I'm not sure the camera actually knows the focus distance at any given time, so I have a feeling we won't be seeing focus scales on the LCD. It might be easier to just know your hyperfocal distance, AF on something that far away, and then switch to MF mode and snap away.

Of course your right about the setup for
semi-hyper-focal..... But with the zoomie....
It's better to just use AF. Once I start with primes,
then that avenue would be best.....
Wishful thinking but, I'd love a focus scale....

On another note.... The zoomie has very little focus shift
thru it's range.... Very nice...

I sincerely hope that the new breed of photographers toting compact digital cameras with high-quality sensors have enough wisdom to learn from old masters like Winograd.

How is the camera for lag? My biggest beef with current digital p&s cameras is the delay between pressing the shutter, getting focus lock, and the picture being taken.

In other words, how responsive is it?

And how usable in manual focus/exposure?
