Cabin Fever Attack! Time to go test another camera. The skies cleared out, and the temperature was conducive to not needing gloves while handling the camera, so I loaded up a roll of Ilford FP4, and hit the road with an Olympus OM-G mounting a Tokina AT-X 28-85mm 1:3.5-4.5.

I started out in Montgomery County, on what is known as Mount Tabor Road. After it crosses the line into Roanoke County, it becomes Newport Road, but keeps the Route 624 number. It's ends are SR 311 in Roanoke Co. just west (Northbound) of Catawba, VA, and US 460 Business in Blacksburg, VA. The first two photos in the series are a couple of abandoned farm houses, on either side of the county line, about a mile apart. There are plenty of good homes in the area, but these two were just not wanted anymore.

After arriving at SR 311, I headed down into Salem, VA, and caught the late afternoon sun against the buildings of the Salem Civic Center complex, which is comprised of a basketball arena/event center, baseball stadium, and football stadium (where the NCAA Div III National Championship is played).

Then there are some random shots taken along Peters Creek Road in Roanoke, VA.

I like the Ilford, but it's no substitute for Plus-X. The camera worked fine, with the metering being spot on for the most part. Just one shot was fooled by the light, or maybe the lab cranked it up a bit. It's the one called "Departure", and is the only frame I did any exposure correction to. Every other frame only had cropping, with the exception of the last frame, because I cropped too much in camera. I still have a bad habit of messing up my horizon, so about half of these were rotated a bit to fix that.

"Departure" also needed the exposure fix because of a flare. I was using the factory hood, but you know how it is, those things are only good at the wide-angle setting. I thought I could tell if I got the lens angle right to eliminate flare, but it still got me on a few shots. Maybe someday, they will invent a hood that zooms with the focal length.

I didn't really bond with this camera/lens set-up. Something about the ergonomics of it all, and the fact that I don't care for the read-out system in the viewfinder. Oh, and the frame counter window is opaque. From the looks of it, I'm not sure I want to take the top off to find out why.

Hi,

Thanks for the post and pictures, especially the one above. I've hankered after a Tokina AT-X ever since I read the reviews in late 1981 or early '82 and you've reminded me again I should be looking for one...

Regards, David

The AT-X line do seem to be popular, from what I've seen of auction prices, and number of bidders on them.
