I got bored, so I tore into this recalcitrant camera, as I could see oil on the shutter.

It's acting properly now. I'm going to take it to BaconFestVA.

While BaconFest VA was nothing to write home about, I did manage to get a few good shots to test the camera. Understand these are just straight drug store scans, and no manipulation has been done with them, not even a crop. So as is, they are slightly crappy. But with a little work, could be something good.

Wow
You really get after it !!
I have a couple xa2's that have unresponsive shutter "buttons". They are slow or delayed when pressed at times so I miss moments and as a result… have retired these cameras.
Any help for such a problem or is it just near the end for these two?

Wow this is great! I love when people tinker with cameras to get them working, I feel this will be more necessary as time goes on
Thanks for sharing valuable information and how you went about doing this.

Well done with that XA! I find it a intimidating design to tinker with.
I had this problem. Some microswitch activated by the sliding door was not pressed home reliably. The plastic sliding door gets some play from use. If you press the sliding door in the bottom side against the camera, the release should work every time.

Thanks, everyone. This camera was given to me in a box of unresponsive cameras, and I've been slowly working my way through them.
I've taken quite a few P&S cameras apart to bring them back to life, and that experience helped guide me on what to take off next, Julio.
BTW, I've reworked the photos from the BaconFest event. They're a bit more presentable now with exposure corrections, and some judicious cropping.
