OT- Bicycle frame building, from earlier thread.

I looked at the link, only one image appeared.
I like torch welding. I bought a little "aircraft" torch and love it- it's like using a pencil.
Are you working with 4130? Cool project, either way.

Hey, that's better. The results are just gorgeous!
I see now, it's brazed socketed construction, old style. My first 10 speed was assembled that way.
Again, congratulations!

Silver brazing -- a man after my own heart. Well done. What is the tubeset -- double butted? Columbus, Reynolds, True Temper, Tange, other? How about the lugs? Most impressive job. (And we haven't talked frame angles, fork rake, etc.!)

Hi Guys,
What a lovely change from cameras. I built my own frame and bike about 20 years back and am still riding it at 72(73 next week). Columbus SL with Prugnat lugs Cinelli forks and bottom bracket with Campag ends. Its an immense source of satisfaction and kept the costs way down. Still working on my first camera though!

Enjoy!

My other passion besides photography is cycling. I have a stable of 8 bikes. Believe me it is not easy being married and having that many in NYC. I have 2 fixed gears, an original Pogliaghi and a Gunnar Street Dog, that I also ride as a single speed. One of my other steel road frames is a custom Ryffranck. I don't think he's in business anymore, as he was beginning to have hand troubles and getting on in years. He was fanatical about mitering the tubes so that they fit together perfectly, even without the lugs. Someday when I can afford it, I would love to get a Vanilla - http://www.vanillabicycles.com/. Sasha does some really beautiful work. His frames are really works of art.

Great job on your frame. Beautiful work.

Wow, you have made a very impressive and beautiful bicycle. There are some pretty nice TIG-welded steel frames available these days but none can match the beauty of traditional lugged designs.

Have you thought about custom framebuilding as a side job? 🙂

KoNickon,

I used Henry James cast lugs- he's in Redondo Beach, CA, and True Temper tubing- various single butted tubes from their Verus HT 4130 line. 74 degree headtube, but with a little longer than usual (for track bikes) chain stay, as I wanted to be able to add fenders.

I honestly wish it were just a little stiffer, but it rides very nicely

Ah, at last, other RFF members who share my passion for fine bikes and riding them. dpretzlka: very nice frame build-well done. Fixed gear riding is big fun, and here in Sacramento is easily done. I have a four bike limit imposed on me years ago by my wonderful wife (no, I did not sign a pre-nuptial on that) so my 4 have to be carefully selected. (Thank goodness there is no limit on camera gear!). Here are links to my bikes: a burnt orange Roland Della Santa road bike built to look like a 1974 road bike, a lime gold/crimson Della Santa fixed gear (soon to be sold to make way for a TOEI 650B randonneur), a French blue Mariposa (of Tornoto) randonneur bicycle (note the custom made racks), and a red-orange/silver Steve Rex (our local builder) touring/town/commuter bike. All parts on these came from my parts boxes, all frames are custom, and all are ridden regularly. Bikes and cameras, coffee and beer...working together hand-in-hand. Happy holidays to all.

Keith-
I painted the frame myself-- I had done some restoration work on my 1971 VW Bus a year or two earlier and decided to paint the bike to match-- Cloud White and Chianti Red- the original VW colors.

Bobkonos-
Thanks for the compliment, and I would like to say that your Mariposa is beautiful. The chromed fork crown is really nice. The Della Santa is a work of art as well.
Its funny that you list bikes, cameras, coffee and beer-- bikes and cameras are obvious, but I also work for a little coffee comapny, and have brewed a little beer (though wine making has held my interest much longer)

My wife has yet to set any limits on my hobbies - but our first baby is due in about two weeks, and I have a feeling I might slow a little on these other interests.
