Anyone know of any open positions at photography, imaging, marketing, etc related businesses in the Washington state (Seattle + 30 miles)? I'm desparately seeking employment and things are looking grim. I figured I would post here as a supplement to my other digital gatherings. It would be odd to post a resume on RFF. . . .but I will if someone asks.
 
Oof, you and me both. I am bored with my current career endevors. Though they are heavily photographicly involved.

Let me know any NW jobs that you pass on, and I'll tell you if I come across anything as well. I search around every month or so to see if anything has come up.
 
Have you guys tried craigslist? I find an occaisional listing on there, though not usually anything I actually want to do...

Craigslist is where I have been doing the mass of my searching. I find it to provide the highest hitrate.

the UW has a nice job thingy too, but most of the positions are flooded with applicants, and I have only had one response to an application. Followup is hard because you have little in the way of communication information.

I am getting lots of responses from Insurance companies to come and work for free. From lawn care companies to spray poison. That kind of thing.

BA + MBA + 10 years of experience . . . . forget that stuff.

Yeah, I'll let you you what I see. Craigslist is brilliant, if you don't already know about it.

shutterflower, at the risk of recommending the obvious, I suggest you post a local want ad --which I believe is free -- on Craigslist in your area...I believe they have postings in Seattle and other cities in Washington State...You might also look at the classifieds in Editor & Publisher...Newspapers in the area may have openings...One suggestion: be more positive and just state your wants [without saying anything about being desparate or grim] ...I hope this helps...regards, bob

After reading what others had to say, I have a better suggestion: Rather than fight against all the others, I suggest you print up six of your favorite photographs and take them around to all the newspapers and magazines in your area...Ask to see the Picture Editor and, if you keep after it, someone will take you on as a part timer, to see what you can deliver...You might also try the local Real Estate firms, advertising houses, car dealers and others who you can see use photographs...This route is less competitive...I'm sorry if you've already done this but this is how I got what I got [although it was not in photography but in reporting the news, which is close to what you want]...If you really want work, it ain't classy but Sears and outfits like Sears are always looking for photographers to take portraits, particularly of students...regards, bob
 
I remember when Bill M was asking this about getting into paid photography. I suggested finding and going to horse shows as a way of getting into equine photography. People with horses usually have some money. Like pet and baby photography, the owners (or parents) are in love with their pet/baby and automatically love the pictures. Best of all, the pets/babies can't voice their complaints about how they look in the pictures. This advice is only good if you like being around horses outside and in barns. Not for everybody for sure.

A friend of mine did that. She experienced a great deal of frustration until she, one day, got her big break. About 15 years ago, right after she graduated from a prestigious Los Angeles area art school, she went looking for a job as a record album cover illustrator. She showed her bood to every record company she could find, big and small. Most looked and said something like "Looks, good, kid, go get some experience and check back with us later." As she left one of her appointments, a thug-looking guy who was moving office equipment asked her what whe was doing in *that* neighborhood. She explained and he asked to take a look. Reluctantly she let him. The guy hired her and she illustrated several of his album covers. The "thug" ended up being a rising rap music star... who actually rose to a position of prominence in that segment. My friend got paid good money, got the experience she needed, and has several platinum albums on her wall with inscriptions crediting her for cover art.

Moreal of the story... Bob is right, do whatever it takes and don't turn down any reasonable opportunity.

following up on Brian Shaw's comment on album covers, my wife and I were in a photo studio in Manhattan some years ago where the photographer was setting up for a shoot...He was looking for a model to put on the cover and asked my wife if she would be interested...She said no but he explained that he wasn't going to show her face but just the back of her head...So somewhere out there, there's a comedy album with the back of my wife's head on the cover -- in full color. So, ya never know...regards, bob
 
Or you could do what I did and open your own studio. I combine mine with a gallery of my outdoor/nature photos and do weddings. I also advertise around the area schools for senior photos and go to the local school sports and shoot I then show the photos at the next game and get a lot of responce.

_________________________________________________________________Following up on Byuphoto, I remember in college that a local photographer went to the football games [and, I guess, other games] with a Leica 250 Reporter camera, which takes 250 35mm photographs, shooting pix of couples only, boys with girls...He then hung them up in the window of his studio, across from the campus...Another photographer in a camera store in a New Jersey town where I used to live does the same with local students at every small-town event and then gives them away to anyone who wants as a sales promotion.

On whom to shoot, I once asked a European photographer I knew at the United Nations how he decided what pix to take...He said he shot pix of anyone standing with the American, British, French or Russian Ambassador...Now he would probably add the Chinese...He would not shoot, say, the Nigerians or the Bolivians, as examples, unless they were standing with "someone important" that they could send home for local consumption...He said that very few would buy pix of themselves alone...You have to know your market...
 
Around here Moms always want photos of little Jim or Jan playing sports. Baseball season is especially good as most games are in daylight and it is easy to get to the fence. I also have contacts with all the local papers and supply photos to them also. I put out flyers in all the wedding shops and in all the beauty/hair salons around. Got to cater to the ones that buy
