Panasonic seems to be planning a "Rangefinder" style M43 camera with rear viewfinder.

Writer got it right by explaining what a rangefinder is.

BUT

he missed the real big news possible implication

Could this Panasonic "Rangefinder" style camera

be future home of the SUPER CHIP SENSOR being developed by Fuji and Panasonic ???????

I read on Mirrorless Rumors that the upcoming Panasonic GX7 will not have the new Fuji/Panasonic sensor. But we won't know until August.

Screen are viewefinder, but that's nitpicking.

Somehow, the rumour about the second coming of the L1 has been there for a long time, including the GX1. It's always a clickbait and fired up excitement.
But now, I put the corner EVF in m4/3 camera into the "I'll believe when I see it" category. :p

5-axis image stabilization is also part of the rumors.

^ Screens would be much better viewfinders if they had a folding hood that blocked out sunlight.

screens are screens and viewfinders are viewfinders. thats why we use different words to describe them, because theyre different physical things.

Other than the "Super Chip sensor" part of the rumor, didn't Olympus already do this beautifully with the OM-D ?

I agree that EVFs are viewfinders. But it appears this new camera will have neither a true optical rangefinder or an optical viewfinder.

I've been of the opinion (since 2008 when the G1 was introduced) that touting mirrorless cameras as "rangefinder style" just because the top of the camera is a bit flat and the EVF (if it even has one) is off-center toward the left (which the Oly Pens, the most rangefinder-ish styled model in the micro-4/3 line, don't have, BTW) has little to do with the camera's functionality. IMO, a G-series Lumix is more rangefinder in compactness and functionality than a faux-rangefinder styled camera with add-on external EVF - which is still centered on the lens, not near the left hand corner.

Which begs the question, what about this new camera is rangefinder-ish, other than the flat top? If it has a built in EVF, that would be a great step forward in combining functionality with compactness, getting closer to the G-series (despite its dreaded hump).

That's why it's "rangefinder style" not "rangefinder function". ;)

In overall appearance, the models with the central viewfinder, the corresponding hump, and pronounced grip immediately remind most consumers of small SLRs. Meanwhile, the more compact, rectangular bodies, viewfinder, screen-only, or whatever...are more reminiscent of rangefinders...in style, if not necessarily function.
