I’m really curious to see how everyone squeezes stuff in these pick n pluck foam inserts.
I’ve got 3 larger Canon EOS bodies and 2-3 small lenses and I’m thinking I need a hard case for all the traveling I have and plan to do this year.
Looking at the cheap Apache 4800 from Harbor Freight. 45$ with a coupon right now!

My old boss, How-Weird, hated me, but he gifted me a brand new Pelican case with a built in wheelie set-up. I don't know the model, but it is appropriately sized as being ideal as a carry-on for flying.
What I tend to do is use my Domke and other padded camera bags as my primary holder, and then just use the Pelican as my armored case. Basically the idea is a few bags held within a case. Nice and modular.
Also know that B&H also sells used Pelican cases and others.

I had the 1510 carry on case too, started with the pick and pluck but when you change gear you have to get new foam so I went to the dividers and was able to use it for three different gear changes. I sold it with the last of my film MF cameras.

I use a variety of cases. Only one of my cases is a Pelican. The rest are Pelican knock-offs.
Since I frequently change the contents of my cases, I prefer to remove the foam inserts and individually wrap each item.

Having previously dealt wit the pluck-it foam, my last time around I went with the dividers instead for a Pentax 67 system. Works much better in terms of storage efficiency. Of course, you can also rearrange the dividers as needed if you change equipment.

Having traveled a lot with cameras and lights, i have a bunch of cases. They are all Pelican or Halliburton. The biggest is, a huge yellow Pelican i use to store rarely used cameras and accs. As far as picking cases for car travel, (i don't fly much now) i use a couple of older Halliburtons. One fits in a backpack and, goes unnoticed by most. The other, a bit bigger, holds my small lighting kit with modifiers. I still use a lot of film so, film is split between the two.
The camera case has no dividers. I wrap the cameras and lenses in protective foam and fit them in. That case will fit under an airline seat.
Whatever gear i use after transport goes into a soft bag, usually an old Domke.
I think, i like my old Halliburtons because they weigh little and offer good protection. The Pelicans are heavier and will crack if dropped in really cold weather. I've never cracked one but, others have and warned of the flaw. In other than freezing weather, they're likely okay.
