Penti Sammallahti

His book “Here far away” is one of the best books of photography published this century. Sammallahti is incredibly accomplished; his vision and technical capacity are astounding.

Forgot how I stumbled across him, but bought the "Here far away" book when it was released and then saw some prints at the Photographers Gallery...
Very impressive

His retrospective at Kaapelitehdas in Helsinki was an amazing exhibition, immaculate prints. His book "Here Far Away" is the most beautiful thing I own.

Greatly underrated artist.

Also seems like a great person, here's a small write-up on this photo https://www.theguardian.com/artandd...tti-sammallahti-best-photograph-russia-winter

I seem to remember Here Far Away was photo book of the year a few years ago - which was how I learnt of him. It's one of my favourite photo books. Stunning photos and great reproduction. If you can find a copy I'd highly recommend it!

He has an exhibition in Fotografiska Tallinn, and had a photo tour in person talking about his craft.

He said his true passion is print making and photography is just a side gig. Recommended a printed edition - Gilman Paper Company collection by The White Oak Press 1985, printed by Richard Benson. It's a limited 1200 edition. If anybody can get its' hands on it, might be worth checking out.

Also noted Bill Brandt as his greatest idol, strangely another famous finnish photographer Arno Rafael Minkkinen is also great admirer of Brandt. With Minkkinen, the Brandt influence is apparent in his own work. I wonder what Bill Brandt's connection was with Finland.

It was interesting to hear about his printing practice and offset printing techniques. Creating multiple negatives for shadows and highlights to be printed on a single sheet of paper.
