oh, and generally it is more like educated guesswork. I call it the "sloppy zone system." shoot some film. look at shadow detail. Not enough? then rate it down a bit. at that point when you're happy with shadow detail, then look at highlights while developing. too bright? then decrease.

eventually you get in there. you have to make big steps, though - if not enough shadow detail, go from 400 to 250, not 320. you won't see the difference of 1/3 of a stop as easily with a small, 35mm frame. With development, go in 20% increments. Big steps to start, then start doing like 10% then even 5% changes as you home in on the right combo.
