What a great site. And it's absolutely disturbing how many examples there are from recent years with magazines putting people's heads on other people's bodies, removing people from photos, etc.

I have a book called The Commissar Vanishes, which shows examples of people erased from history by order of Stalin in the Soviet Union. It shows before and after photos, where a person like Trotsky or Bukharin is removed from a photo. Some photos were altered multiple times over the years as people in them were arrested and shot or exiled.

I did a presentation in J-school for an ethics class on photo manipulation in the Israeli-Lebanon War... lots of stuff there, like extra smoke in photos or a guy parading a dead baby around for hours (determined by the angles of the sun and EXIF data)... There really is nothing new under the sun...

thanks for sharing...fascinating stuff, what i find disturbing is the tendency for magazines to mix heads with different bodies....

Great example with the clouds as it refers back to the earliest manipulators, Hippolyte Bayard, Rejlander and H.P. Robinson. Funny that these names weren't mentioned in the op's linked article.
