Photography Workshops in Cuba

Seems like there's a huge difference between the two - the Sven Creutzmann portfolio shows far more imagination as well as access to more intriguing locations. Sounds exciting, good luck whichever you choose!

I went to Cuba just before Christmas last year and visited Trinidad amongst other cities. I met a couple of Germans there who was participating in some workshop, but I don't know if it was the Cardwell one. The German guys seemed pretty happy with their workshop though. Both pictures below are from Trinidad and I wouldn't be surprised if the elderly men still sit on their stairs...

I must agree with Paul that Creutzmann's pictures are far more interesting than Cardwell's. I've actually been to the boxing school in Havanna where the boxing pics were taken (it's in the eastern outskirts of Old Havanna, on Cuba street between Sol street and Plazuela de Paula). They don't mind photographers if you ask nicely but they expect a small donation (a few dollars). My travel partner even took a boxing lesson there on our last morning in Havanna.

Cuba is a pretty fascinating country, in many aspects they still live in the fifties. Don't expect too much from the hotels, some of them are pretty shabby. Food is doesn't vary much, chicken or pork with rice and beans most of the time but lobster is often available "under the table" for a decent price.

I was interested in the Creutzman workshop and the travel agency I used for my last cuba trip offers this workshop together with flight and hotel and they informed me that the workshop is digital! This makes sense as there are no minilabs, at least I haven't seen them in october/november 2004 🙂

The link you posted is for a workshop run by a different agency.

I've registered with the Creutzmann workshop - they told me film is possible, but they encourage use of digital because it's easier for class review, and because there's a limit on how much film tourists are allowed to bring - 6 rolls. I don't know how strictly this is enforced.

I'll bring both digital and film and see how it works out.

Thanks to all for their input, and I hope I have some worthy photos to post here.

Cheers,
Nick

Never had problems with film, usualy I have some 20 rolls with me, one per day, plus a digital SLR.
