I just got a digital camera so that I can experiment with color (cheaper than slides/c41) and snapshots. I still prefer the film look (slides in particular) and I don't think that I can replace that look without ateast going full-frame...but that is besides the point.

So my questions:
Is there a third party filter add-on software for photoshop for that color film look (like silver efex)?
What about for instagram type of filters (don't flame me)?

I'm honestly trying to avoid mastering photoshop because I just want something quick, easy, and that looks good-enough. Else, I will stick to b&w (silver efex) for anything "serious" and just instagram for anything "fun".

The best I know of is Nik Color efex which has many different effects including a color film emulator. Problem is it is a plug in that requires Photoshop, Paintshop pro or LightRoom on which to run. So that makes it a bit expensive proposition although it comes boxed with Corel Paintshop Pro X4 or X5 Ultimate editions. This would be the cheapest way to get the Nik plugin - which is also very useful in other respects as its a great suite of effects of all sorts.

There may well be other alternatives though - I have in mind the possibility that such a filter may be available as part of a image processing app for a Tablet computer if you have one.

Cool. Check out their site. I think you may be able to get it free on a thirty day trial to try it out. From checking my copy the film effect lists at least a couple of dozen different film modes - everything from Kodachrome 64 Professional to Fuji Superior 1600. I cannot speak for how realistically they work but they are configurable by the user - using sliders etc to adjust tone and saturation and so forth. I have a real sense that I have also seen other plugins designed to do this job as well but cannot recall details. Perhaps someone else can help with regard to that if you wish to explore further.
