I only have the PS Limited Edition. I wonder what I could do more in scanning and editing if I had the full PS version. If anyone knows what the differences are, let me know. Maybe someone own two editions of the full PS and wants to sell me the old version? For example, someone suggested to me to use the histogram. I don't see any histograms with the PS L.E.

I personally feel one of the greatest options about PS CS, and newer, is "Selective Color" located in image > adjustments. Of course, if you are strictly a b/w kind of guy, that tool doesn't do anything for you. And, a far as I am aware, histograms are regulated to Adobe RAW. Could easily be wrong on that one, however.

Yes, you could do more if you had the full edition, but would you? After I got the last Photoshop, I bought the Adobe Photoshop Instruction Book (I think it's subtitled "Classroom in a Book") and went through it, step-by-step, day after day, and 95% of it I never used again; in fact, I've forgotten most of it. Watching me try to make a selection with the "Marching Ants" is like watching a man with delerium tremens trying to get down the first drink of the day.

Photoshop is for people who like to manipulate images with a computer. I've got a feeling (just a subjective, no-proof kind of thing) that really good photographers are not the same people who like to spend hours in front of a machine working an image; just as there used to be "darkroom" people who seemed to like the darkroom better than the shooting. There's nothing wrong with doing that, but it's different than running around shooting. I personally will probably not upgrade to the next Photoshop; I think Lightroom may have everything I really need.

LE is quite an old version of Photoshop. You'd do well to at least move up to Elements 4 or 5 (and your LE might even qualify for an upgrade price).

Some of the things full Photoshop has, and increasingly Elements has, is 16-bit editing, Shadow/Hilight tool, Curves, Healing Brush, and raw image conversion (if you're also using a higher end digital).

16-bit editing is really good to have if you're scanning B&W. It gives you far greater control over tonality adjustments than 8-bit editing and most scan software gives you the option to save in 16-bit format. The other tools mentioned are also highly useful for general-purpose photo editing. Given that Elements is not an expensive package, you might want to look into it. The new version 5 has added the missing Curves tool that allows for more sophisticated corrections than the Levels tool.

My $0.02 Cdn -- which after the exchange rate is even cheaper 🙂

Thanks to all of you.

Gene: Do you mean that I could[maybe] buy/get an upgrade drom PS online?

Yes, go to the Adobe site and check to see which products qualify for an upgrade to Elements X. They're generally pretty generous about allowing upgrades.

Just about everything qualifies for the Elements 5 upgrade... get the 5, it's coming out this month (Oct).

Does anyone know whether the new Elements 5 allows for 16 bit image processing? I'm still using Elements 2 and it doesn't.

I think it also depends on whether you are a PC or Mac user. I belive Adobe have left out some features in the Mac edition of Elements 4 that iPhoto does just as well. I assume they have done the same in 5? Does anyone know?

16-bit was added in Elements 3. I have tried it with Elements 4, and it is embarrasingly crippled. Virtually nothing works.. 🙁

I ended up getting CS2 after downloading a 30 day trial very recently, it simply solved the printing problems I had with Elements, allowed full 16-bit mode and I loved using curves, so I had little choice and took to plunge...

It's there.... when you select the Upgrade tab from the store, you see this at the bottom

Upgrade Direct from Adobe.com and save up US$20 instantly, no mail-in rebate is required. To be eligible for this upgrade discount and install the upgrade software successfully, you are required to own a previous licensed version of Adobe Photoshop Elements, Photoshop Album, Photoshop LE, or Adobe PhotoDeluxe® for Windows.

It's only a $20- dollar difference anyhow 🙄

Looks like Elements 5.0 is now available.
