Sarah Hoskins' project is an 11 year photo series documenting the people in a collection of historic small negro hamlets in KY. There is also a great story that goes with the great photography. Now she is out of funding (personal & grants) and wants to complete printing. She and I have corresponded about this project before. I cannot say we are good friends but everything I know about her says she is worthy of our support.

Read or listen to the NPR story about the project

See the photos and more of her work on her website

And here is the kickstarter page where you make your pledge

Now it is nice to say "wow, this is really good work" but what she really needed is pledges. Please consider helping her bring this to completion.

4 weeks ago, I posted about Sarah Hoskins trying to fund her excellent project on Kickstarter. To date, 103 people have pledged $7,564 or 84% of the $8,910 with 7 days to go. If she reaches the $8,910 in pledges, the project goes forward. If she falls short, no one pays their pledge and she gets nothing.

The funding pays for the materials for Sarah to make archival silver prints for a museum. This will result in a permanent record of her 11 years documenting the small Negro hamlets in Kentucky.

Sarah tells me that many of the people who are financially supporting this are the residents of these small Negro hamlets in KY. That is impressive.

Sarah is busing her *ss trying to get the remaining money in the last 7 days. I got a personal e-mail from her asking if I would please re-ask the group (RFF) that I asked previously as she thinks quite a few RFF members pledged to support the project.

Please pledge so that Sarah can meet the funding threshold and complete the documentation of her work.

thanks,
Bob

I'd love to but this Amazon payment thing only takes credit cards, which are not used widely in the EU. Haven't got one... 🙁

@ Sarah: Good luck getting it done, impressive project and true dedication to put your back into it for 11 years! Hats off!

I have received another personal e-mail from Sarah. She thinks I am tapped into to this wealthy charitable photo group. Essentially every time she asks me for help, she gets some new pledges in the next few hours.

Thanks for helping Sarah as I think her work is very worth while.

A friend of mine has diabetes and has had two toes removed. Now, he needs orthopedic shoes that cost $1,750, and his insurance won't cover any of it. On top of that, he just had a tumor removed from the right side of his chest.

I gave him a bunch of money that I couldn't really afford to give to help him buy the shoes. As nice as this sounds, I've donated to a different cause.

Even so, I hope that she'll find enough money to finish her work.

Thanks for pointing her work out Bob. It's absolutely fantastic, and it would be terrible to think that it might not get reified, for both Sarah and the communities she has documented.

Marty

I still recommend everyone listen to the NPR story and see some photos or just go to Sarah's website for the photos. All having nothing to do with funding.

This is really good documentary photography.

Got a mail from Sarah thanking all supporters. She's reached her target. The project is on. Well done Bob.
