I am about to remove the $900 from my secret stash and buy this RD-1, but I don't know what lens I will need to buy for it. The Jupiter 50mmf3.5 is good but when added to the idiosyncrasies of the RD-1 I am afraid it will limit my shooting experience too much. Please tell me what you advise and why.
Thanks!

I have good results from the CV Ultron 28/2. I'm currently looking for a reasonable 35, I have an Industar 61 and I agree that for the most part 50mm is a dash too long. There's alway the fun CV 15 too.
I'd go with a 28mm lens as well. The R-D1's widest built-in frame lines are 28mm which the sensor crop factor makes equivalent to approximately 42mm, a versatile focal length.

I like the 28/2.8 FOV and that Elmarit seems awesome! What price can I get one in good condition? It's kind of funny to think I would pay 2X the price for one lens than the whole camera LOL!

Remember, the RD1 is a cropped format camera, so if you like the 28mm FOV, you're going to need about an 18mm lens. If you were to get a 28mm Elmarit, you'd be seeing the field of view of a 42mm lens.
The 15mm shows close to a 21mm and it's a great lens on the RD1.
I liked the 21mm f/2.8 ZM Biogon on my RD1, it was close to about a 32mm FOV after the crop factor. That 50mm Jupiter would be a good portrait lens as you'd get the center sharp zone and would have effectively a 75mm field of view.

The skopar 21 f4 really fine, all finder without framelines, a great combo

OK, here's the deal, I pulled the trigger on the camera. My friend offered me a deal pretty hard to resist.... Same deal as before but with a CV 40f1.4 added... $1200, I could not resist..

When I had my R-D1, the CV 35/1.2 was pretty much attached to it full-time. The color and rendering from that combo were just magical.

Welcome to the R-D1 party~ The 35mm frame works really well for 40mm lens.

I think you got a really good deal, looks to be a pretty clean camera. Obviously the RF is in proper adjustment, the shots are nice and crisp. Well done.

One suggestion would be to change the strap lugs from the triangle ones to round ones. The triangle ones eats into the lugs faster.

What's the "film rewind" knob for on the R-D1?

It's a shutter knob for readying the shutter for next shot, just like that on a film camera. Only it does not need to do the film advance portion of the work.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I know the camera has a manual winding lever for the shutter. I'm asking about the round "rewind knob" on the viewfinder end of the body (or I've completely misunderstood your answer).

Congrats OP. That's a really great combo. You'll get a lot of satisfaction using it and some great output too.
That lens may tempt you to buy a film body to accompany the RD1
One of the best from Cosina.
Cheers!
