POD will 1.6 mm work

I am ready to replace the POD in my camera but have been struggling to find a 2mm material. I went to Home Depot and found a neoprene rubber washer that is 1.6mm thick but I am afraid to install it if it is not going to work. I don't want to have to tear it out after using superglue.

Any advice? What have the rest of you used as a suitable material?

I got washer exactly 2mm thick. Civilization have produced them in so many varieties that finding 2mm washer shoudn't be hard.
I'm not sure though that 1.6mm will not work. It's easy to try and check.

I used a 2mm thick piece of rubber and it worked OK. I don´t know what hellacious situation would arise if thickness is other thanthat.
I do not remember if there is any way to adjust the rest of the switch assy. for different thickness, but AFAICR the adjustment of the switch assy isn´t that easy.
Try the 1.6 mm piece first, and if it doesn´t work add a cut to shape 0.1 or 0.2 mm thick polyestyrene sheet (one at a time) over the rubber until it works.

Thanks for the answers. I installed the 1.6 neoprene rubber fender washer material and it worked without a hitch. I used the needle method and it was very easy. Unfortunately the wire for the flash connection broke another wire from it's soldered connection. I ended up trying to remove the lens assembly and got enough slack to fix the solder joint. I would say that after trying to disassemble the lens assemble to replace the POD is very precarious. I would recommend the pin method. I used a notecard soaked in solvent to clean the old material off and then used super glue to put the new one in. Actually only a half hour job is you are careful and don't break anything else. I definitely would either cut the wire to the flash connection while working on it or make sure the top is well supported while you are working. I leaned the top against the body and it fell and broke the other connection. 2 hours to get it all back together.

Lowes or Home Depot sell rubber fender washers and they work fine for $.64. Perhaps I was too exacting trying to find 2mm but I know tolerences can make the difference between success and failure but in this case I lucked out.

The tolerance for the pad is .076 - .080.
Otherwise the metering will be effected.

Here is a quick fix for a POD. Take the 1.6mm piece and cut up a credit card and super glue as many pieces as you need to bring it up to 2mm. There's not a lot of banging against the POD, but unfortunately, the material Yashica used eventually gets soft and mushy. I've had good luck simply using a piece of the plastic magnetic material you use to hold notes and pictures on the refrig. Super glue a couple of pieces together if you need to. I'm constantly looking for some stiff plastic material to use in the future. I've probably replaced a half a dozen or so PODs and they've all worked out well. Love those Yashsicas!!! Been shooting them since 1970.

just a though...if POD could be made of hard material like plastic, wouldn't Yashica done that or even made that part whole metal - we all know place where POD sits and why isn't that part made just thicker to eliminate need in POD ?
That's why I used rubber washer. Maybe I'm wrong. Let's be so. It's so easy to replace POD each 20-40 years 🙂

Interesting thought! Perhaps the Japanese thinking at that period of time closely resembled the American philosophy. Don't make them to last forever, let them break down and then you'll have to buy a new one. Capitolism at its best! Just a thought! Seriously though, I have a couple of GSNs and GTNs and MG1s which probably date back over 25 years and they still have the original POD as far as I know. Great machine!
