Well, they are from JPGs SOOC but gently post processed in GIMP. The monochrome images were take in the camera's monochrome mode (which is pretty amazing, actually).

It certainly is.
I wonder if the Lux 7 or 8 are any better in this regard, given they have a higher resolution sensor. I suspect not because it seems that the guts of these cameras are kind of the same from the 109 forward.

I couldn't say. However, I would say that the output from my LX100 (the Lumix equivalent) doesn't look as nice - to my eye, at least.

Well Leica did do their own software so that could account for it.

Yes, I seem to recall that being suggested before, and since both models appear - otherwise - to be very similar, it might well be the case.

I will now confess, the Typ 109 is one camera I've lusted after for a long time. One of many cameras, to be sure - but at the top of my too-long list of wants. I missed out on one a few years ago as the asking price - AUD $1250 - was too rich for my budget, let alone my blood. I now live in hope for a cheaper one to cross my path some day.

I am the photographer and my wife is by my side. In our case, a story that started with an injury caused by a small fall, and which developed into a major infection, requiring hospitalization including intravenous antibiotics.
Since I was bored in the hospital, I asked my wife to take the smallest bag out of the camera cabinet and bring it to the hospital. It turns out that she did indeed choose the smallest bag she could find, except that it was not the one with the M camera that I had in mind. In any case, my wife’s choice was completely appropriate, and the Leica D-Lux 5 did an excellent job for me.

They have been coming down here in the US, I cannot speak to other places. I had wanted a Lux 8 but they are impossible to find. I came across my 109 on eBay for around $750 USD. They can be had for even less than this, but mine had the original box, battery, and accessories as well as a couple of extra batteries. The only thing not original was the charger. 8s are now slowly starting to show up which means 109 and 7 prices should be dropping.
Honestly, after using the 109 for several months, the only reason I could see to buy an 7 or 8 is the higher resolution, but it's not compelling. 12 megapixels is more than enough unless you want to make giant prints. IOW, the 109 is, I think, an excellent value. Very happy with mine.
