The Okavango Delta is amazing. However, in 1998 we visited a small town in the north of Namibia in order to see the famed Okavango. We finished up camping in the lawn of an upmarket lodge right next to the Okavango river itself. The river isn’t very big at this point and our night was punctuated by people crossing the river from Angola, which was suffering immensely from its civil war, walking across the lawn and through the township to the shanty town beyond. A lesson in itself. The Okavango is such a special place. I was there in 2005 and still dream of going back to visit one day. Silently gliding through the reeds on a mokoro is magical.
We spent quite a bit of time in that area in 2009. Contemporary travel advice said that Namibia is safe apart from the area from Rundu to the north-easternmost tip of the country. According to locals it’s always been a bit wild up there, although I note that the whole of Namibia is currently regarded as relatively safe. When we were camping in an unfenced campground along the river near Rundu I was walking to the bathroom early (still in the dark) one morning when I was startled by a man with a rifle, who smiled and declared ‘there is a leopard!’ and accompanied me to the amenities. Yes, Rundu was our destination. We got the car stuck in sand in evening after dinner at a/the local restaurant. 6 blokes wandered over and pushed us out so we could drive back to our tent.We spent quite a bit of time in that area in 2009.
