If you were to chose two of your own favorite street photos.
Which ones would it be - and why.
Also post any additional tips about technique, thoughts, etc about how you were able to capture your images.

** Remember be selective - post the two photos that you really think are your best **

1) 'Laughed At', Chicago. 1999.
No 'technique' here - just grabbed the image real quick - which unfortunately caused the dof to be a tad off the kids face.
28mm shot.
Tri-X or T-Max. Can't remember.

2) "Toy Soldier"
Here I had a chance to focus and frame a little bit more carefully as the boy was standing at attention.
50mm shot.
35mm film but cropped square.
Pretty sure it's Tmax 400.

Hi -- I rarely shoot this genre, as strictly speaking most of what I'm doing is "environmental portraiture." but here are a couple that probably qualify...

Strangely enough, both of these were shot on the same day with a Pentax 6x7 and 45mm lens I'd bought that day. Ilford XP2 film. I was just wandering about keeping my eyes open. :)

I did ask the young man about taking a pic, but the lady in the wheelchair probably had heart palpitations upon hearing the Ka-chunk!! of the big Pentax right behind her...

Both have strong graphic elements, with good angles and shadows.

Kris, love that photo of the woman in the hat.
Excellent composition and great colour and sharpness.\

Doug, those certainly fits the genre - and they are both great!

Thanks Richard. That shot is far from perfect though. Something that looks like a computer monitor in the background is annoying.

Also I hope she doesn't check this site though. I definitely don't have model release form and she may sue me for that =)

I keep my finger cross hehehe.

Doug, I like the second shot much more. It has something to do with the shadows, the broom and the dust pan.

Richard and Kris, I like the first shots from both of you! Really nice... And, Kris, I just realized from your admission that I posted a couple of disqualified ones too! Ooops... we'll just say they have that "rangefinder look" to them!

I must admit this is way too funny - I realized that the photos I posted were ALSO taken with an SLR (Canon).

So..so far in a rangefinder forum...we have three people posting their favorite street-photogs...and all so far with SLR's....

Come on..there gotta be some one out there that have their favorite ones taken with rangefinders! ;-)

Ok, this is weird! So by way of atonement, I'll offer this one after an exhaustive search. I have plenty of shots taken on or near the street but they don't have that street photo look. This one might make it...

Voigtlander Bessa-T, 35mm Leitz Summicron 8-element first version, Ilford XP1 last July. The frozen veggie plant was processing sweet corn, and the truck driver was impatiently waiting for the tire-repair guy to finish fixing things so he could haul more silage out to the pit. I like the body language... and again strong side-lighting.

Richard... I believe I posted comments on your images in the Members' Galleries. They're great, and you really captured the "decisive moment" there!

Kris, neat colors! Good eye for what they call a "capture".

Doug... I like your shots too, the second is really nice!

Now... here are my favorites from Barcelona (which are the best work I've ever done... and will ever do, unless I return there!)

Something about technique...

About a year ago, I got scolded in Photo.net for a shot I posted. It was two girls, eating and not looking very becoming; a certain photographer told me (and this has been one of my guiding principles) never to take photos of people if they wouldn't like to see them afterwards. Another important guideline: always plan your shot.

So, I left my hotel one morning, looking for couples kissing. It's not hard to find them in Barcelona... if you know where to look: near the University area. I simply didn't count on finding them right at the exit of the metro station. I saw their embrace when I was coming up, and snapped the photo when I came to the end of the escalator. BTW, I used my Leica and a 'cron 50/2, with Scala film.

Now, here's my second favorite. I was walking with my wife down the streets of Cartagena, Colombia, searching for a post office. We got separated by the crowd... and this kid just walked in front of me. I wondered how the situation would look through a viewfinder, so I put the camera in my face, focused as quickly as I could and shot. My Canonet was loaded with Scala film. Here it is!

Francisco, that's a great shot! We can blithely assume the seated gent's expression is in response to the young couple... whether it is or not. So, is there just something about Barcelona that brings out your best, or what? :)

Great shots gentlemen !! Would be difficult to find something up to them, and even more having in mind my (still) low number of street photos, but there we go!

#1 I'd have regretted a lot not taking this one, as if for example I had thought the direct sun would made it worth nothing...

And #2 This was a quick shot with guessed focus and exposure, but I like the concentration of the "namewriter" and the interest of people around him...

Francisco, the kissing shot is a good catch. And, I love the tonality of the photo.

You other guys have good shots too. I haven't taken a street photo in a while myself, and if I looked at some of my old ones, I don't have my scanner up anyway.

A couple of my favorites are at http://www.phototalk.net/photos/showphoto.php?photo=7750&password=&sort=2&thecat=998 and http://www.phototalk.net/photos/showphoto.php?photo=8670&password=&sort=2&thecat=998.

The woman with her daughter was with Fuji ST901 SLR. The three women in the market was with a Yashica TLR. Both photos are ancient, one about 20 years old, the TLR one about 30 years old. I do have some with RF's. It would just take a while to dig them out, then figure out how to scan them. Sorry these scans don't look too good either.
