Does any one know off hand how much a roll of 35mm Tri-x (36exp) will cost me in Tokyo? I will be there in December, and I'm still deciding if I want to buy there or bring my own. I get it here in Santa Monica for about five to six bucks a roll, cheaper if I order bulk from B&H at about $4
Thanks for any help...

400TX 36 exposures is 450 Yen a roll so that works out to be $5.80 a roll.

The 3-roll pack in my freezer did cost 1180JPY some month ago.
If you buy the rolls single-packed it is usually ca. 420JPY, a little bit more expensive as Neopan 400 135-36.

Why not order Arista Premium from Freestyle? Even with the CA tax it is still a good deal.

If you can find it cheaper at home, it's worth it to take it with you.
I've found it easy to take the rolls and put them into a ziploc bag, to make it quicker to go through security and customs. I've never been refused a hand inspection when I've asked for one (that said, I've also never had problems with film going through the Xrays I go through...never ever leave film with checkin luggage as those Xrays are a lot stronger)

I was looking into that. People say its actually tri-x. I just don't know how true that is.
Also, one of the reasons I was asking specifically about tri-x is I am planning on doing the one camera, one lens, one film project which would last for a whole year. Tri-x is a film that I trust to get me through it along with my M6 classic and a Color-Skopar 35/2.5 lens
btw, thanks guys for the responses. I think I will take film with me. Just enough for what I think I might shoot. It is after all a vacation with the wife. Buy extra there if need be, which shouldn't really add much of an expense.

If you aren't strapped for cash and can afford it, and you shoot a reasonable amount of film a year (i.e. less than several hundred rolls a year), buy Tri-X over the Arista if it gives you piece of mind. I do. It's not *that* much more expensive.
Anyway, just take it with you. I don't know how much you shoot, but if you are only going for a week or two, budgeting 2 rolls/day doesn't take up too much space and will probably cover your needs. As long as you aren't going solely for the purpose of shooting.

The price has increased this year, which puzzles me. With the yen as strong as it is, Tri-x should be 1/3 less than it was a few years ago, but the camera stores always keep Kodak prices just a bit higher than Fuji. Not good for Kodak, but many serious Japanese photographers prefer it to Fuji Presto, so it still sells well.
A 36 exposure roll is 440 yen at Yodobashi or Bic Camera, a brick of three rolls is 1280 yen. I bought Tri-x last night, so the prices are current.

... likes film again.
The prices sometimes differ slightly between shops of the same chain, so Tri-X bought at Yodobashi in Yokohama might be different from Yodobashi in Shinjuku or the other main shop, Biccamera.
The price increase for Kodak and Ilford was announced earlier this year, Kodak B&W films increased up to 40% (100 ft bulk roll of Tri-X from 4400¥ to 6000¥ from July 1st.)
If film is cheaper or same price at home I would bring it with me, especially with the strong JPY everything in Tokyo will become luxury good.
