i just got a coolscan 4000 (for free actually) and i am having trouble loading some fuji neopan 1600 into the sa-21 strip adapter. it will either suck it in and spit it out or it will suck it in, make the click it makes, then when i try to preview or scan it spits it out. other rolls of color film load fine. anyone else have this problem? any tips tricks?
i did splice a bit of thicker film as a leader, it loaded but when i tried to advance it forward it spit it out... it is a used scanner, anything in the adapter that might need adjusting?
thanks!

Back to film
I've had problems with the sa21 in instances where the film has been cut "through" the sprocket holes. It's only really happy when it has complete sprocket holes to deal with, and when the strip has at least 2 frames.
If it continues to be a problem, and you still have the slide adapter, you could get hold of the FH3 adapter (I bought one last week, it IS still available), and this solves the problem, but is frustrating in other ways

thanks for the reply! the trick to cut the negative so as the sprocket holes are preserved worked.. mostly. it would load but the scanner would reject it when i tried to preview. i swapped out sa-21s and made the roll modification, this fixed it... now if i could only get decent BW scans out of it...

I'd read that the 5000 wasn't as much a BW scanner as a colour one. I'm a Vuescan user, and my experience with Vuescan is that it's a SUPERB BW scanner
Have you tried Vuescan?

i agree, your BW film has to be in top condition for the nikon. while the interface is really bad, vuescan is what i am getting the best results from.
