Problem with an HP5+ roll in 120

Just developed a fresh roll of HP5+ in 120 after having used the same usual Rolleiflex which doesn't have the least bit of a problem and the same steel developing tank and reel etc etc.

Both the two edges of the film seem to have been veiled on all their length. The Rolleiflex image is very large so on some frames the veiling somehow gets into the frame. :bang:

The only reason I can reasonably think of is that the protective paper was either too thin or too loose, so that the film got veiled at some point when the unexposed or exposed roll was out of the camera and out of its aluminum bag.

The Rolleiflex was loaded and unloaded in subdued light, with the same careful film handling as usual. Nothing got loose while loading or unloading the camera.

I remember that when I was cocking the camera, I noticed that the cocking motion was unusually smooth (I mean, that I use to feel more resistance while cocking my Rollei when there is a film in it - this time, the cocking operation was quite as smooth as it is when the camera is empty).

Any hints ? Thanks.

Note : that was my first Ilford roll after some years with Kodak and Fuji in this very camera. And, again, it's a fresh HP5+ roll from a recent batch (09AHN1C02/03 - Exp. 2016/09).

I have had slight banding on the edge of 120 film when i have used a takeup spool from a different supplier than the new film. To avoid this i have saved spools from each of the film types when i develop my own B&W and use them when i switch types.

Brilliant. IMO this is the explanation. The previous roll was a Kodak TMX. And yes indeed the Kodak and Ilford spools aren't 100% identical...

Now I have an Ilford take-up spool in the camera so if the next roll of the same HP5+ batch doesn't show this, I'll take it for granted.

Thanks !

@John Bragg : no problem with the fixer.
