Problem with R-D1's range finder?

Have had my R-D1 for about a month now and am loving it to bits (fortunately only figuratively to bits thus far). However, I have noticed that my latest shots lack that crisp sharpness my 50mm DR cron should be producing, especially wide open but even at low ISO and in good, even light. Having read of problems with this camera's range finder, I'm now starting to wonder whether I am suffering the same fate.

So my questions:

1. How do I test the alignment of the range finder?

2. How do I fix it if it is out of alignment?

Thanks!

I have a longish piece of wood marked with a felt tip every inch or so. I big ruler would be just as good. I lay it on the floor and take a picture of the central mark from one end, from a height of about 800cm and a distance of about 1.5m from the central mark.

It's then easy to see, even on the LCD, whether the lens is really focused in front of or behind the mark you chose.

If it's not exactly right, there are several threads on this forum about adjusting the rangefinder. It may or may not be easy to fix, depending on the type of error you find - a small amount of front or back focus is fairly easy to fix, but it's fiddly, and you may want to get a repair technician to adjust it for you.
