I recently purchased a Nikonos III (pressure tested before sale supposedly) with a W-nikkor 35/2.5 and I absolutely love it, which is why I have been trying to find information on the care of underwater cameras, specifically this one.
I will be using the camera exclusively in fresh water, mostly glacial runoff (brrr), so I shouldn't have many problems with corrosion, right?

I do know that I should have a backup set of O-rings, but I have no idea where or if I can purchase a set for my 30 year old niche camera. Anyone here know where, or know someone who might know where?

I also have read (and expected) that I should lubricate the seals before use, but what lubricant should I be using? The o-rings are black, which I think means nitrile?

Thanks

Run, do not walk to the Southern Nikonos website, where you should find answers to a lot of your questions about this camera:

Don't hesitate to call Bob Warkentin if you have any questions. If he's like he was in the olden days, when the Nikonos was THE camera for underwater photography, he'll be happy to talk to you.

I may even have a spare set of o-rings around.

There is a seller on Ebay, Joe Swaney is his name, that sells many parts for the Nikonos, he may have a set he can sell you.

Be very careful what kind of o-ring grease you use. Some kinds will do damage to the o-rings. I generally use Ikelite grease on my o-rings and that has always worked for me. The following link shows where you can get it:

I used the Nikonos V for years before I started shooting underwater with a
digital camera.

Thanks Ellen, I've looked at the SN website for info before. I think last I was there it was listed as 'on hiatus,' could be wrong. I'll give Bob a call tomorrow.
