Hello
I have a Yashica MC Zoom 35-70 mm 1:3,5 -4,5 for sale at a local auction site. A potential buyer asked me if it can be used in a Contax 167MT. As far as I could find, the zoom will fit the camera (I guess) as it has a Y/C mount, but I am not sure if everything in the camera will work. The zoom is purely mechanical and it seems that there is a lot of electronics in the camera asking for a more sophisticated lens.
Can someone please confirm if this lens is suitable (or not) for the Contax 167MT ?
Thank you in advance

Google is your friend: http://camera-wiki.org/wiki/Contax/Yashica_lenses and gives some interesting information. I don't have my manual handy, but I think all functions are only available with MM lenses, which should be marked even on other brand lenses.

It should work OK with aperture-priority and manual metering modes. As far as I know only Zeiss lenses, not Yashicas, were available for C/Y as MM-versions. MM-version is required to make program and shutter-priority modes to work with Contax bodies.
Best,

Your replies answer my question and were much appreciated Mika and oftheherd.
I had read about MM lenses but I was not sure what these were.
Thank you !

Jaoa,
- correct, use in Aperture Priority - the 167 won't work in Speed Priority.
This is also true when buying used Zeiss Contax lenses and the key to recognizing which will work with Speed Priority is that Zeiss started marking the last f-stop number in green.
- eg. f16

I have a Vivitar lens with a green f/16 mark. It works in all modes.
