as a number of 50mm lenses of varying age and condition have collected in my cabinet, i had the idea of comparing them for flare and susceptibility to stray light.
conditions were worst case: i took pictures with my computer monitor at the border and outside the field of view. the monitor had a distance of about 1 meter, while the focus point was at about 2.5 meters.
focus was on the staple of printing paper on the window pane. outside the window, you can see street light at a distance of about 500 meters.
pictures were taken fully open, and at 1.4, 2.0 and 4.0 where available.
pictures were taken with a leica M9, set at ISO 200, internally processed for black & white with high contrast. no post processing. exposure time was determined with a gossen sixtomat digital (incident light metering at the point of focus).
the lenses included in this comparison are:
an uncoated leitz elmar, with scratches in the front element,
a single coated industar 50,
an uncoated summitar with round aperture blades,
a single coated summitar with hexagonal aperture blades,
an uncoated carl zeiss jena (prewar) sonnar 5cm/1.5,
a single coated carl zeiss jena (postwar) sonnar 5cm/2.0,
a carl zeiss ZM sonnar 50mm/1.5,
a carl zeiss ZM planar 50mm/2.0,
and finally a cosina voigtlaender nokton 50mm/1.1.
you can find the pictures (including full resolution) in my flickr set "coating and flare":

hope this is of interest to someone ...
cheers,
s.
edit: sorry for the messed sequence of the pictures in the flickr set. that was the flickr upload program, not me!
