Hello everybody and Happy New Year's from Yangon.....

So today I went to the Shwedagon Pagoda and I noticed that my 35mm/1.2 (chrome version) was wobbling......at first I thought it was the hood so I took it off and put it back on.....well, after closer inspection I noticed my lens has the "wobbles" that have been discussed on this forum before......but I can not recall anybody talking about it in the sense that it affects the focus or not....

My lens is "wobbling" under the aperture ring and above the focus ring.....it is wobbling frontwards and backwards (not really side to side).....I am not sure if just the housing is moving or if the internal elements are moving as well.......

Does anybody have any experience with this and if so, please share it here.....I have 7 more days left on this trip and my 35mm/1.2 is my "go-to" lens.....I wake up at 6:00 am and hit the streets and I am often shooting at 15/1.2 or 30/1.2 in the early morning.....I know that I can sacrifice a roll to the gods and do a test on it tomorrow and hopefully get it developed and scanned on CD so I can check it......but I wanted to ask you guys here...

So does the wobbling have any affect on focusing?

Right after I figured out that it was wobbling I was pretty bummed out, but I figured what the heck, I can make do with my other lenses that I have with me......but then the more I thought about it, I realized that this lens is the one that I use the most and I sort of need the speed.....

to top it off.....after I realized that my lens has the wobbles, I ran into two guys from Singapore (one is a member here) and they were on a photo trip with a bunch of photographers.....they both had m9's....one of the guys had a Leica 21mm/1.4, 35mm 1.4 and a 50mm/.95......which is basically my dream kit......and the other guy had some nice lenses as well.....as we were talking about gear, I felt like such a loser.....my gear is busted.....my 28mm elmarit looks like it has been run over by a truck and, the foot on my 15mm vc viewfinder is broken and my 50mm rigid and 90mm/2 are great lenses and all, but compared to the kit that these guys had.....just one their lenses costs more than my whole kit.....

anyways, I said something funny like "man, you guys have some nice gear", and he told me, wait till you see the rest of our group....after exchanging email information, we went our separate ways.....I saw a bunch of other guys that had full on slings with lens pouches and huge tripods and fully decked out.....they all had these huge DSLR's and tripods and so much stuff.....I have no idea how one can walk around and shoot like that, but they were doing it....I took some photos of them because I was amazed by how much gear they were carrying...

In no way at all, do I want this thread to turn into a gear bashing thread on CV lenses, because I am extremely happy with what I have purchased from them and all, but I would like to hear your responses on my problem.

Another thing, I have been on some pretty rough and bumpy train/bus/pick-up rides in the last 12 days but my Domke bag has always been sitting on my lap to avoid the hard bounces.....to be honest, I was more worried about the focusing patches on my m6ttl and m2 getting knocked out than I was about my lenses....but needless to say, my gear has not been knocked around or had any hard impacts, I was sure to keep it safe and on my lap throughout this trip......and all my other lenses are all fine....

anyways, it it almost 10:00 pm here on New Year's eve and I am going to go out and party and drink my worries away until tomorrow......I will check this thread first thing in the morning to see what you guys have to say and then probably go out and do a test roll and see what's up......

cheers to all of you and Happy New Year's....michael

no replies????

ok, I guess I am going to test it out now and see if I can get a lab to do one hour/one day develop and scan on CD to check it out...

cheers, michael

Mike, you didn't bring your spare? Sorry I don't have an answer for you.....maybe if you had a digital you'd know ;-)

haha....yeah if I had a digital it would be super easy to check.....and no, I didn't bring my spare........

going to test it out in about 20 minutes....

cheers mate

That's a real bummer Michael! I was going to say a pity the guys with the M9's didn't offer to test the lens on their cameras.

In response to you feeling a loser. Your gear gets real use to take great photo's so it's going to show the signs of use. It's your very fine ability that counts for much more than the gear! :D And you say it yourself you can achieve pretty much everything with one lens (albeit at the moment it's poorly) so you don't need loads of flashy kit and you are far from a loser!.

Hopefully you can get it fixed when back in Bangkok but that doesn't help you now. I wonder how the version 2 will shape up in terms of reliability? Too early to tell yet. But maybe you will consider getting one?

2 years I use my vc 35 1.2 version 1 everyday

eventually the focusing ring wobbles and it affects the photo quality, it has glow now. after an assignment it splits into half, I decided to bring it to a repair man. one of the three main screws snapped. now my lens is good as new and smooth again. and it gives me also the sharpness that it used to be.

before it wobbles:

Sorry to hear about your lens - well you have your results so you know now that focus is affected. What I was going to say - it's hard to tell from just your description. Also, a small set of small screwdrivers and some clear nail polish can go a long way to keep things working well. I dont know what screws got lose/broken in your lens, but I can tell you - all my CV lenses get the same treatment when I got them - all screws that I could secure with nail polish - I did and never had any wobble issues. I dont travel as much and as far as you do - but I still think it would help. There are several threads on different lenses with instructions on how to fix wobbles.

And last - as far as feeling like a loser - PLEASEEEE!. You pics are some of the best I have seen - it's not what you use - it's HOW you use it. Plus I think there is nothing wrong with your setup anyway. Sure new Leica toys are great and I would like to have them too - but that can be bought. Your vision, your view of things, the way you tell a story with your photos - I wish I could buy that!

Reviving an old thread.

My 35 1.2 (1st version) recently developed the same wobble. And of course focus is affected. I shot a wedding last weekend with it and it was awesome. I must have put it into my bag a bit rougher than normal, because now the front part of the lens wobbles.

Looks like I'll be sending it to DAG.
