Getting withdrawal symptoms from not taking enough photos. But I did manage to snap a couple during dinner the other night of a couple of the guys I am away with on a work course.

For me, this is the strength of the R-D1 and CV 40/1.4 combo. Low light night portraits at 800 iso.

Pretty good night portraits, I'd say... makes me want to get a 40/1.4...

Have you considered converting to BW so that the main subject stand out more as compared to the background red brake lights, e.g. in picture #2?

Fun Shots....the background has a lovely soft oof glimmer

Yes, :) the 40/1.4 is Special on the RD1

Great shots!
Isn't it great to sit together with some colleagues from a work course and have some beer?
Fun nights, mostly...

Thanks Kent. It's great as we are all mates but a 3 month course is a little long :)

Hi Desire,

I convert quite a lot of my shots to B/W or sepia (via Epson Raw) and I can see what you mean, but in this case I kind of like the background colours, even if they are a little distracting.

John - those are some great shots of your mates. How did you get such good white balance? Epson RAW? In my experience shooting high-ISO JPEGs at night I get more grain and WB problems.

I always shoot raw and use Epson Raw. I usually don't need to adjust the WB but occasionally pick the best of Epson Raw's selection.

I also limit it to 800 iso which I really believe is the R-D1's strength.

Hope that helps - John

So do I but with Lightroom. Very nice shots and you're right, ISO 800 is outstanding with the R-D1, especially with people being the subject.
