R2 meter problems

Help! There must be someone who's been down this road before.

My nice olive R2 is driving me nuts. When I'm metering it'll be at, say, "> O" and then I'll open up two stops and nothing will happen so I continue until suddenly it says " <". Then I'll get back to "O <" and stop down and again nothing will change until it says " >" .

Have any of you had such problems? Is there any consensus as to who's best to send it to to fix it?

Have you tried new meter batteries?

Yes, I tried new meter batteries just now. It's a little better, but still not OK. This jibes with my feeling that something is not making a good, or reliable, electrical contact. Thanks.

is it happening in low light?
are you exceeding the metering range of the meter?

No, it's happening at all light levels. When I'm using the meter on my Cosina 107-SW I can watch the indicators cycle from one light to another L to R or R to L as I change settings. ON the R2 one setting indication will hold while the aperture or shutter cycles through two or three stops and then jump to another setting indication.
