Dear RD-1,

I don't really know how to write this or know where to start.

We've only gone out for about five months but in this time, we've had a blast. We went to New York together and we've been all around Chicago nearly every day. But somewhere in amongst all the lens changes, the exposures, the RAW conversions, I had to have an honest conversation with myself. And when I did, I had to say something.

I'm breaking up with you RD-1. I'm sorry, it's not you, it's me.

It's funny, it took me years to get the courage to ask you out, and in the final months before I did, I couldn't stop thinking about you. All I could think about was your manual film advance, your analog dials. Oh how I found it all so charming.

Blame the romantic in me, but I thought that all those other cameras with their fancy Auto Focus, and their iTTL flash systems, and their Matrix Metering were just showing off too much. I thought I wanted something more traditional.

But after five months of trying to make it work, I just can't fake it anymore. I just can't hide my feelings of frustration and annoyance at our time together. It's not that the memories that were captured were ever bad. Far from it. Looking back at them, they were beautiful times that I'll cherish. But the number of times that I cursed your name started to become a problem.

When a special moment appeared and I asked, "Are you ready to go?", all I wanted to hear was "click".

But what I hear instead was nothing.

That's beacause you'd fallen asleep again and I needed to prod you awake before you'd respond. To say that you're narcoleptic would be unfair, but I've never gone out with anyone that got tired so quickly! I'm sorry, but less than 150 frames with moderate LCD viewing before you need to 'take a break and recharge' is not for me.

But the main thing that I just can't get over, has really nothing to do with you. It's your manual focus.

I know, I know!

I knew what I was getting into when I asked you out. It's not your fault. You're just built that way. I found that I spent so much time thinking about balancing distances, hyperfocal lengths, apertures and ISO all the time, that I just stopped having fun anymore. I longed for the days when I just used to photograph instinctively again.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do next. Maybe I'll try being single for a bit. But I want you to know that you're a lovely camera and any man would be proud to have you hanging from their neck. I just think that that man won't be me.

George

Dear George,

i've been seeing someone else for some time now. do you know what it's like, trying to constantly live up to your expectations, knowing you're looking at that bimbo in chrome? sure, she's exposing her backside to you, but she doesn't have what i have up top!

i'd like to say i'm going to miss you, but someone is promising me a Noctilux (none of that fake russian stuff).

good luck in the future,
R.

Leave the LCD off and folded in, use the camera as you would a film camera, don't chimp, and (a) you'll get good battery life, and (b) you'll enjoy it more.

Eh, we've all seen guys who say this kind of thing, but then 6 months later they're spotted in Mexico with an M8-floozy... :D

Best,

An rf shooter not liking manual?

George, you don't deserve her! She's too good for you! :)

Yeah, in this generation of conveinence, RD seems like an antique.....

afterall, who wants to depend on thier mind/eye to do any work. Geeze....focusing, setting aperture, let alone deciding which one to use....conserving power and not wasting images.....yeah...sure as hell sucks....

and then moving in close on the streets with a relativly small camera and making pics almost noisless......

yeah, who in thier right (MIND).....would ever want to go through all that crap......

Yeah, yeah, I know I know...I'm crazy for even buying a second RD body but then again.....I'm on medication and maybe someday I'll smarten up and get another fully auto DSLR or something else that lets my brain/mind/eye sleep.....

Maybe the answer for you is a Kodak P&S. The people who shop at Walmart buy them by the bushel. You know the $49.95 one. No controls to worry about. Just fun, fun, fun.

Ian

I totally forgot about the LCD screen on the back!

However, that is a GREAT breakup letter. A good chuckle, thanks!

Thanks for all your comments so far guys. I thought that if any group of people would understand and love all the foibles of this beautifully designed camera, if would be you guys.

This is the forum that got me all excited about the RD-1 in the first place, so I thought it fitting that it be the place to annouce my breakup.

I've got one last fling planned with my RD-1, after which I will be planning on selling her with along with several accesories and lens. When I get back (in a month) I'll post a classified.

In the end, RF shooting just wasn't my bag. Shame on me.

Love means never having to say you are sorry

PS Now which dumb schmuck wrote that?

Thats hilarious man! well written.
...those, by the way, are the exact reasons I sarted going out with an RD1 LOL

my canons started feeling like I was having safe sex all the time: clinically removed from the actual photographic process, straight to the end, with no contact during the trip; sort of the highway system: it will take you from one end of the country to the other without actually seeing anything!

..I think I'll stick to the side roads, but your point is well taken. I, too sometimes have a "need for speed" so I take out my 1D, frame my 1 year old daughter, shoot at 8 frames per sec. for a few seconds and confuse the heck out of her; then pull out the RD1 and take a nice photo of her.:D :D ...then move on...

.........george.

For me it's like (not like, really, you know...) using a p&s - framing on the LCD at the back is like looking through a DSLR, only worse, and squinting through the VF is like, well, squinting through the VF (only the Epson's heaps better!) :)

... two different ways of seeing the world.

SLOW DOWN MAN! DONT DO IT! LOL

Try shooting film with an old manual camera then come back to the RD-1. Slowing down and thinking about what I'm doing has really helped me a lot. I hope I get many more years out of my RD-1.

If RD-1 was your first RF, then I think you started in the RF from the wrong side. Before you sell it, try something like Zorki 4 for a little while, or a fixed lens RF. Then go back to RD-1 and see if you can save your relationship. ;)
