Rd-1

I just read on CVUG forum Karen Nakamura's message claiming that the long awaited RD-1 will be on sale from Friday in Japan for 312,000 Yen. That would make the RD-1 about 3200 USD or 2500 Euro.
She handled a pre-production model and was pleased with the output, though she did have some doubts about the camera's durability.
Anyway, it seems the RD-1 is finally here. I'm curious to see some real world shots from it. Too bad 2500 Euro is way over my budget. Half that price would get my thinking of buying one. For now I'm still waiting for my M2, and wondering what the new Bessa R3 will offer.

It's gonna be an interesting photography summer/ autumn/ winter this year. :)

It's sounds like it's a pretty nice rig, but at that price I'll stick with my DSLR (Fuji S2 Pro). I suspect as with all manufacturers that the price will drop a couple months after release. Gosh, for 3200.00 I could buy a couple summilux's huh? I hope that they have researched the market, I don't think the newest Leica digicam has done as well as expected.

I think the real strong selling point with the RD-1 is that you can use your existing Leica lenses - I believe that the other Leica Digicams were all fixed-lens cams.

Also - the RD-1 is a 'digital rangefinder' attempting to simulate that same focusing concept.

So a couple of important differences but I'd still wait for the RD-2 or RD-3 :)

Hiya -

Y312,000 with a 10% discount comes out to about US$2500 (at Y108/$) which is about 2100 euro. This is considerably more affordable but still expensive. I'm going to wait until the price sinks to about US$1500 before buying one.

Welcome to RFF Karen. The Great Dane looks like a reindeer with the bandages on his ears.

greetings!

Odd to think Mr K may be in the lead this time, with a "retro" analog interface for a digital camera! The Digilux II points this way too. I hope this is the leading edge of a trend to a more intuitive human interface.

I can turn on my Canon G3 and make basic use of it easily enough, but anything more calls for familiarity with modes and menus. It can be and should be better than this!

How about a fully traditional RF camera with the minimal modifications necessary to shoehorn a digital sensor in where the film would be... and make it usable? Just what many have been asking for... Ta-da! The Epson RD1. A breakthrough!

welcome karen
my site has linked to yours for a few months, but i haven't visited in a while. i swear either your site or your collection has doubled in size since i last visited!

i don't own a leica but i find the idea of a digital rangefinder to be extremely exciting.
